  • Pro's and con's of wall hangers

Read about wall hangers and as yet undecided on its value other than in a music shop.

Pro's
Nice to display your guitars
Nice wall display to liven up the scene
Convenience, grab, play and return
Zero or little stress on the neck
Feel like a guitar collector 8)
Use as a coat hanger

Cons
Missus will be rather upset for drilling holes and hooks for your pleasure and not for hers' like her photoframes for example
High risk of your prized possession being bumped, scratched and God forbid dislodged while hoovering
High risk of your guitars being stolen due to obvious line of sight
Get a regular scolding for hanging coats and gear on wall hangers and not in the closet
Dust
Temperature extremes and obviously tuning and retuning issues
Use as a stickit post for divorce papers with next must have collectable
Serious head knocker

Shouldn't be a problem - even in a shared space like a living room. Good looking guitars enhance a space and are conversation pieces for visitors. If she doesn't like the look of your guitars, start looking at PRS catalogues and mention the prices. My wife moans that I don't have any hung in the lounge - that I want to keep them all in my work/music room.

Err... no. Why you hoovering the walls? ? Mount a rubber pad on the wall behind the body so even if they are knocked against the wall while dusting, they are protected. Don't ever leave them plugged in.

Don't hang 'em in line of sight of the windows.

I agree with her. Don't hang coats on guitar hangers, they are for guitars (and leads).
    Dust
The only real concern on your whole list. Then again, if a guitar is hanging long enough between plays to gather a significant amount of dust, you should sell it and buy something you will actually use.
Temperature extremes and obviously tuning and retuning issues
Guitars are comfy in the same range of temperatures as humans, so shouldn't be an issue. No obvious about it - not even my 12-string goes out of tune from being hung.

      Fixed ?
Prefer to keep them in their cases, with two "go to's" out on stands. A nice or rare guitar dangling in the air makes me nervous. :-\

Brought a couple of pairs of GRIP STUDIO hangers.

They are the dogs danglers and look really cool.

            You're obviously doing it wrong

My missus loves geet hanging in the living room. Problem for me is i find myself gazing at the guitars rather than watching tv or worse.. engaging conversation.

I've even let slip with "where have you been all my life Mon cherie " when reaching for my soopa, only to be met by a roll of the eyes and some mumblings about never being called something or other..

She even decides which guit looks best and where..

All i do is drill holes. Mrs tells me where to drill em..

            Oil vey
            This sounds terrible

We live in a 1 bedroom flat. The only place I have is to hang the guitars on the wall... ???
Won't your strings wear out quicker if they open in moisture etc? Just seems that they are protected better in a case, but having guitars on a wall is one of the coolest things ever!

No. You have more to worry about from your sweat and oils than air. Anyway, cases aren't usually airtight.
Hung guitars look good & get played more often.
                        a month later
Been looking at getting a wall-hanger for my main axe and so I searched the forum and found this thread.

Alan's post needs something like +1,000,000

I'd like to add some more benefits of wall-hangers:
                        - More floor space (if you're upgrading from a normal floor stand)
                        - Less cable mess on the floor
                        - LESS chance of being bumped while hoovering as (provided you're not hoovering the wall) your guitar is no longer in the hoover's way

Those are my reasons for it. My guitar is also, currently, in a corner that gets a lot of sunlight. By sticking it on the wall in that corner that does not get any sun, I can keep my jamming corner while also hopefully saving it some sun-damage. Yippee ?

ps, guido did recently become a dad................serious.......lol.

I was going to mention your old pad....................looks way cool. I would say high enough so that ankle biters can't get a hold of them though.

                            I absolutely hate wall hangers

cause my wife an instantly see when I bought another... ?
@ ICM where did you get all the leftie wall hangers ?
These wall hangers actually swivel to accomodate Left and right.

They also "lock" your guitar into place when it is put into them.

                                      Oh you naughty boy!
One of the biggest cons of wall hangers is that if you leave your guitar plugged in on the hanger it gets pulled off the wall and onto the floor. It has happened to my Strat twice. Notwithstanding All my guitars are still on hangers. I just dont have the space to put them anywhere else.
