Just as I thought it was safe to go back into the water...

I've landed a copywriting gig from Monday (12 Feb) until end-March.

I had said I'd be able to assist with the upcoming GD in terms of finding outstanding tabs, chord sheets, etc, and I will honour that. However, the time I'll be able to devote to this high task will probs be limited to evenings and such.

    Jammer julle.
    Lemme know.

    • So. I know I'm infamous for not pitching up to these things.
      But & however.
This time I have a valid excuse.

      We're looking for new digs.
Then we have to pack, move, and settle at the new one, before I can even consider attending another GD.

      But & however.
      Once we are settled...
      No more excuses...

      • ack! the missus' bday is on the 23rd, so i'm sure we'll be celebrating that weekend – saturday and sunday if i know anything about my wife.

let me know and i'll vice versa if plans change this side.

        • studmissile Hopefully we can do it a again with a little more time and maybe more brief specific as domhatch pointed out?

don't get me wrong, i ain't dissing the brief at all. i don't think you guys would've been able to come up with such excellent tracks if it wasn't for such an awesome challenge. just thought i'd give my perspective as someone who's worked in the advertising field for a little bit.

        • gents, all very nice entries. technical and production values are superb.
my thoughts, as one coming from 'the industry', as it were:

V8: nice n soulful, i thought. got the feeling it could 100% work for something like 'soulfood', from chicken licken? not to tie you down, though. it's just a thought.

Stud: good, solid, rockin' stuff. i love that last little 20" refrain as a jingle on its own. often, though, clients will request a proposal to see how the whole thing would sound, and this would defos fit that bill.

Meticus: this is so neat and mellow, which means it's not really constrained to any one market. that little three note 'sting' at the end is a bonus. it could be used on its own once the jingle is tied to the brand identity.

really sorry i didn't make the voting
whoops. did make the voting, just doesn't work lekker on firefox for some reason...

        • i'll find the best tab i can for layla - EC's acoustic version from MTV unplugged - and post the link. probably also UG

if i happen across any other good tabs for the suggested songs that i'm really familiar with on UG, i'll send those on as well

        • Howdy. Is there a dedicated Forum voting platform for this? Or does the Discord channel work as well?

          • V8 just a quick thing - in firefox, couldn't see the select boxes. chrome seems fine, will check now on safari.

            safari is working fine, too.

          • ok, so. dumb question. how do i vote again?

            • V8 replied to this.
            • well, my usual response is that i gotta go listen on the monitors.
then i never get around to it, and never get to vote.
so, in top to bottom order:
Meticus - a true rock n rollin' track, beginning to end. grabs you by the short n curlies, love the instrumentation. the second half is proper lekker.
GTP - luuuurv the drums. one note for me though: a little less china (or is it crash?), a little more ride – (personal preference), the geetah on the intro is special man. and then... and then – BOOM! this is a classic mate.
V8 - this is a typical V8 sound (meant as a compliment) to my mind. love the little incidentals. (do i detect a hint of the Duke in there somewhere?) very nice man...
SydVicious - this is a great take on the track. nothing to add...

              great work all round folks!

            • Like, like, like. Will have to take a proper listen on the monitors, then make me decision.

            • Yup. This @Yeti 'Show Must Go On' entry gets my vote for inclusion. Defos.

            • Geez there are some talented artists on this here forum. Just been going through the various 'playlists,' and – man oh man – whatever ends up on this 'album,' it's gonna be a killer.

We really should try to us this album as a 'demo.' That could enable the peeps whose tracks get nominated to complete them, get into a studio, record them properly and get them on streaming services. Thoughts?

              • Well, seems I missed the drop-dead date. Again. Power's out, so I'll have to do my more formal reviews a little later. Suffice to say - holy heck!

                Great stuff from all y'all!

              • This has probably been covered in the past, but, like Bono, I still haven't found what I'm looking for. Plus, if you enter 'Phase' in the search field, you get a bunch of posts relating to phase fx 😉

Here's my issue. I have a PRS '99 Standard 22 with those funny 'winged' Phase 1 locking tuners. Everywhere I turn, in principle, they should be the simplest things to use:
1 Get the channel lined up
                2 Drop the string in/through
                3 Pull tight
                4 Turn the tuner
5 Give the string a teensy bend, clip, tune to pitch, and voila

I'm good up to step 2. I'm using 10s-42s (EB Slinkys), and the low E just won't fit in the string channel. I think the guitars were factory-shipped with 9s, maybe even 9.5s if I think back to my first Std 22. But surely those channels could accommodate heavier strings? Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the initial lining up of the channel?

If anyone else has a guitar with these tuners, or has had a problem like this they've overcome - without swapping out the tuners for something else (I really don't want to do that for various reasons) - please let me know.

                Spankew ever so

                • Thanks hey.

Oooh, one more suggestion I thunk of but instantly forgot.
                  Mustang Sally.
Original version by Wilson Pickett? First cover in the early '90s? Commitments version?
                  Who knows...

I know, being a soul/motown number it's more of a brass-infused track, but surely it'd be relatively easy (or not impossible, let's say) to exchange the brass for geets?
                  dh|

                  • Hmm. For some reason, the reply I posted on me phone didn't work. Blimmin' iPhones...

Anyhoooo... let's see what of it I can remember. Oh yes. Is there to be a central repository of tab/chord sheets of these tracks so we're all playing off the same, erm, song sheets as it were?

And may I venture to suggest the following two numbers:
The Kinks - You Really Got Me
Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild

                    Just suggestions
                    dh|

                  • Ha! No such luck...

Turns out I actually have Phase One locking tuners on my baby (the winged ones). Far easier to deal with - or so I've been told. Now all I have to do is actually deal with them...

                    Thanks for the assistance anyway
