  • None of the specials held a candle to Toms.... But then again, Toms this year didn't hold a candle to Toms.....

As for local builders, there was Donmeister guitars in the little room, CraigAmps tucked in a little corner, JP Le Roux, and Luigi Marucci in the acoustic room....

The rest of it was just music shops. So pretty much a waste of my time, apart from checking out those 4 and the kemper stand.

The question is, is there just not enough local talent to expo or was this more a money situation where the local guys couldn't afford a spot? Because certain music stores had massive store areas.

I doubt I'll be going again...
    • It will work but your base needs to be bigger and your offset piece needs to be able to fit into the tight cutaway horn section without snagging. and preferably round not rectangular And you have to be super careful around the neck pocket if its already cut because the offset piece won't have anything to push against for binding the back. ?
      • Been a fan for a long time! Just never had the cash to get a set....
The thin, almost microphonic tone these things put out is right in my ballpark! Always been a lover of those quirky Japanese and European guitars with the non conventional pickups
        • Live looping is always cool! Dude is very talented! Check out Grimes as well. I dig what she does with ambient noise.
KT Tunstall also makes use of some effective live looping.

But the only problem is that you need the right looper for the job. Stuff like this isn't gonna happen with a simple Boss RC2. You need at least 2 channels and I've found that multiple 1 channel loopers don't function at all like dedicated multi channel looper ?

i went to Marshall music in jhb to buy myself a Gibson les paul cause i always wanted one and the guy that help me would not even let me play the guitar only after i bought it i could played on it.
At the end i bought a Les paul studio and would never go back to that store again because of that.

What i hear from guys as well they dont keep as much stock as they did a few years back its a shame that a shop like that are going backwards.
Pretty much my experience with Marshall Woodmead as well. To be honest, after the sh!t attitude I got from all 3 times I've been there, I wouldn't even buy a guitar pick from them.

Not to mention that all 3 times they still had the same ancient strings on their expensive Martins and Gibsons. Seriously I had to get a tetanus shot after I played those POS strings....
I'm never letting that go. They carry on like they're doing us a favour :-\
            • The Macaw, Clyde is an accountant and the German Shepherd, Jade was a Stock manager before she passed :'(

Oh you mean when they're home? ? the Macaw freaks out at any loud noises but the dog was chilled no matter what ?
              • Hey man! Glad to hear about the success with the band!
Sucks about the divorce though... At least now you can spend your hard earned cash on more gear ?
                • Whatever's in my string box 3 years down the line ?

Nah it depends on the guitar

D'addario 13-56 for the jazz box
Ernie ball or D'addario 10s for these strats
EB or D'add 9s on the tele
D'add Phosphor bronze for the acoustics
                  • 3/6 - Laptop plugged into a Bose Soundlink Mini

I found it easier to tell with the last 2 songs (Dark Horse and Tom Ford) which were bass heavy... The Compression was much easier to note. And the Mozart Concerto was a toughie but the violins gave it away for me.
The others I chose 320 twice and 128 once..

YeeeeeeeeaaaahhhhhhhhhhNO.... I'm gonna have to disagree with you there... In terms of versatility, the strat has the tele beat. Especially with a few extra mods. (Trust me, I have two of each)
Granted, both types are superb in the right hands...

As for the OP, for 3-4K you can get some excellent guitars second hand... Seriously, check out gumtree and those various facebook pages for selling instruments and you should be set ?
                      • Toms Braamfonteins annual sale. Usually at the end of july or in August. They usually have cheap-ish cases going for under 800 or so bucks?
                        • I have exams starting monday.... Kinda sucks... I probably won't be there
                          • Nice!
Wait elaborate on this swop meet thingy? It sounds cool!
Also is the gimmick a recording module with the original "nanananananananana batmaaaaaan" theme song that plays every time you end a song
                            • Attila, do you thing RS will have those small 1Meg solid shaft pots for a Jazzmaster roller?
Wiring kits these days come in at around R650 bucks for the cheapest option.....
                              • I started bass a few years ago... First things first, Scott's Bass Lessons! (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWTj3vCqkQIsrTGSm4kM34g)
This guy has taken me from crappy warbly uneven tone to slapping, plucking and running bass lines.

First thing for me would be to practice would be finger technique. Alternating between index and middle like a walking motion while doing pentatonics and scales works well.

As for the bass itself, I'd try something with 2 pickups (preferably different ones for versatility)
My GB35-A uses a jazz pickup and a Musicman Humbucker, has an active high and low boost concentric pot and a blend pot for the pickups. lets you take the sound anywhere you want with just a few minor adjustments
                                • Check out the TDPRI forum, there's a CNC build by ehawley and he has the CNC cad files for an early 60s or late 50s Tele if I remember correctly ?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, where did you manage to get the reclaimed wood?
                                  • I do... But not from guitar.... More from being an adolescent with an Internet connection ?
