I am having trouble acquiring new rhythms for songs. Are there any tips from the pro's?

Thanks.

Very good advice. Rhythm guitar is an art and the more you're exposed to different genres/rhythms, the wider your horizon becomes.
Yeh apologies for the curt initial response.. wife was asking me to finish her online efiling ?

I mainly listen to rock etc.. but being Portuguese, i do listen to a lot of Latin music which has really elaborate rhythm at times.. and it definitely helps me to think rhythm sections not always inline with rock.

YouTube some mariza fado to get an idea of what i mean. Some mariachi music too.

        Good luck mate
I find when I get bogged down, try a bit of Reggae, something with a serious off beat it is good for the brain and the hands.

For me it was a little like learning another instrument because I progressed through the difficulty levels to where I can play most of the metallica songs on hard and expert now on the drums... the drums on that game are much closer to the real thing than the guitar. So I think a different instrument gives you a different perspective... It's actually helped me pick out drum pieces in songs when I play with a band... and that changes how I play the guitar.
Get yourself a rhythm dictionary or encyclopedia... It includes latin and pretty much any other genre. Include some listening too, like others suggested.

The easy way is forcing yourself to play something else instead of your normal routine. Experiment daily. The hard way is getting the encyclopedia

+1 practice something that throws you off your game and causes you to focus on getting it right!
There's a cool reggae rhythm lesson on the youtubes by a guy called Tuff Lion. He's a well renowned reggae rhythm guitarist and artist and goes through the basics of that off beat and stuff. Worth it to check out.

                      Boom! Here you go:

It makes sense. Doing the same routine everyday won't get one anywhere.

                        Thanks!

I can only agree with what has been said so far. It boils down to rhythm guitar being part of the rhythm section, which is all about rhythm, timing and groove.

I've often said that the best thing I ever did for my playing was learn to play drums and bass. Learning Latin, flamenco and reggae also opened my ears to a lot of interesting timings, and rhythms.

Another thing that I've done a lot of is playing with/to drum machines instead of metronomes. Find a loop/pattern that's interesting and then spend hours with it, learning to fit along with it and around it. Learn how to push a rigid beat, how to pull it and how to reinforce it and you're golden.

Thanks to this stuff, counterpoint is key to my playing these days. I play off and around the beats.

Oh yeah, and learn now: rhythm guitar isn't just about chords. Single notes and intervals are just as important.
Rhythm guitar? You mean that stuff the inferior guitarist in the band plays while I'm busy soloing.

Don't worry about that stuff. Rather do some more scales.

? Yeah - that stuff that can actually carry the music, even when you're not around. ?

Even "inferior" guitarists like to have some fun sometimes... or should we just leave it all to Lord Muck all the time ???
Heaven forbid everyone can be a hero all the time >☹
Try and play 10 or so Bob Marley songs on a trot, after that, most other things should be relatively easy, INFERIOR, SUPERIOR, who cares ? ? ?, as long as it's fun ? ? 8), and Fiz, i know that you have fun when you jam
