http://www.techadvisory.org/2011/09/new-scam-fake-cs-call-from-microsoft/

we were targeted on our home phone the other evening.

someone phones and tells you they been officially appointed by Microsoft to handle this global security concern.

they tell you that they have detected that you have down-loaded some "very dangerous" files, and they have been appointed globally to help customers fix the problem..

a few quick questions like 'which Ip address' , 'what were the file extensions' etc etc soon highlighted the fact that they had no idea what they were on about..

we kept them going for about 30 minutes until dinner was ready, then I just hung up..

so please be cautious, and in particular, warn the slightly older generation who may be easily fooled by this scam.
They've called me twice, they also ask you to give them remote access to your pc, lol.
no offence to the elderly, but could they even answer such questions? I know i probably couldnt.
ok, but what are they after?
gaining remote access to your pc is fine, but im not gonna log in to my bank account while any one has remote access to my pc...
kinda a stupid one me thinks

What do you guys mean by elderly? Physical age or mental age? I know plenty people in their 20's who are definitely mentally older than me. ?
Haha I hope one of them phones me.. I think I could have a bit of fun ?
One of them phoned me about a month ago. I knew it was a scam from the first moment. I was bored so I had a nice long chat with them, asking them why, how etc. their responses were very funny and interesting (I can consider myself a knowledgeable computer user).

At the end I just started tuning them crazy >☹ >☹ and hung up. Talked about 45mins, couldn't believe they would stay on that long!

While having remote access they plant viruses and keyloggers that send them your bank details the next time you login. They can also gain access by this method to all facebook accounts, email accounts or anything else you type into your computer (passwords).

Kinda scary for the people who fall for it..

Yip, me too. It would be so awesome.

Id better tell my mom about this though

I just had ANOTHER call from these guys. The pestered me a few times about a year ago and then gave up when I started asking for names and to speak to managers.

So today a girl phones with a heavy Indian accent and says she is "calling from Microsoft......." I replied "Bullsh1rt!". Without even pausing for a breath she continues "F*@k you! F*@ you!" and hangs up on me.

                        I am still laughing ... ? ? ? ?
                          So you were propositioned?

I guess so. Now if only I could figure out how to get back in touch with her to take her up on her offer!!!!

I will wait till she calls again and ask her out on a date.

Once they got access to your pc they can do what they want with it. install spy software, copy all files from any software you got. That includes your password file, if you have any, never mind Microsoft promising it is secure etc.. These people most likely sell all the collected data to others that have in depth knowledge and are able to decipher encrypted files.
Don't take anything for granted or as gospel.
They might do that, but from what I understand is, they get you to download legitimate remote software, which enables them to gain acess to your computer, than they run havoc with you computer, in order for you to purchase "legally" their software to "fix" the poblem.

Sometimes they are fun to play with, trying to keep them on the line for as long as possible.

One IT guy said, even if it was Microsoft phoning I'd tell them to F' off and put the phone down! ?

Unfortunately, this is not true. All they need is your permition and your machine name and they can get in. Once they are in, they can easily bypass your firewall as well as your mall ware protection. There are very clever hackers out there. One can hold them and play with them over the phone, but be careful these guys are dangerous.

I once read a article where the person just asked 4 questions and he could figure out where his victom lived. It is really that easy.

Here is a idea to get rid of these people, including telemarketers. A friend of mine did it and it worked. When you hear who they are, burst out in tears and tell them how onely you are and if he/she wants to marry you. ?
Ask them to hold, put the phone aside and carry on with what you are doing. Or hand 'em over to a toddler, telling the child it's Santa for them. Speak gibberish, occasionally repeating what they say in a heavy accent.

Heard a very elaborate one once, where Tom Mabe pretended he was a cop at a murder scene and started grilling the caller and threatening him with obstruction of justice. Ah, here it is:

                                    =

It's called the "Microsoft Tech Support Scam" or "Windows Tech Support Scam" google it, it's been around for a while. They particularly target less tech savy individuals.
