  • Acoustic version fans, stand up.

So a while back I saw Fleetwood Mac in action in Melbourne, where I was living for a while. They played a set quite similar to the one you can see on 'The Dance' DVD, and Buckingham pulled out his awesome acoustic version of Big Love. It got me thinking, and wondering, so here I am. Who is your favourite player to ever have turned out an acoustic version, and what is it?

Some 'rules':
1) They don't need to be a solo artist (i.e. they could be in a band)
2) It must be something they (or their band) wrote originally
3) It must be something that was originally recorded/released as what is commonly regarded as a plugged-in version
4) You are allowed to choose from the M-TV Unplugged Series, as long as it's not Roxette or someone like that. Unless they did a really cool version of something none of us is aware of

Interesting times...

    4) Doesn't make it for me. There have been some great performances that meet (1) to (3) and predate Unplugged or by artists who weren't fashionable enough to get invited.

Also "unplugged" is not necessarily minimal. Seen Maria Carey's turn on Unplugged?

Springsteen's "Unplugged" turned out to be very much "plugged" but some years earlier he had met conditions (1) to (3) with some great live, solo versions of "Born To Run" and "No Surrender".
nirvana's mtv unplugged was something special.. kobain expressed a different character of his voice, softer and more melancholy than his usual rasp, which to me makes their lyrics a whole lot more impressionable.
Okaaaay. So let's agree to have more or less no rules then. Just say this is about what would commonly be regarded as an acoustic version of a previously released track by one of your favourite artists, preferably a guitarist.

        K?
"Bumblefoot - Dash" The acoustic version of this song is amazing beyond words, I guarantee it will shatter you to the core. :-[
I can think of loads. But I'll stick to just one for the time being, Springsteen's acoustic version of "No Surrender." It showed a whole other side to the song and perhaps to the Boss himself. The original was anthemic, a young rebel's song. The later version was more ironic and more resigned and the voice and emotion was that of an older man. This kind of reworking can be very powerful..

There's a sorta web-cast TV show (might be on digital TV) over here in the UK, where they get artists to do covers acoustically
There's a lot of really good stuff, like Lilly Allen doing Naive by the Kooks, Natasha Beddingfield doing This Love by Maroon 5, etc
Check one out on youtube, and it's like Wikipedia syndrome - links on links on links
lets face it the biggest success ever outa the "unplugged" mtv series musta been eric clapton that cd went on to sell millions........ and he never lost any impact or credibility by doing his songs unplugged..damn layla unplugged is awesome but so is the rest of the cd ? i must say i was a sceptic .. never thought layla would stand up acoustically but i was wrong ..it truly does maintain that feel and passion

                =
Robert Plant and Jimmy Page did some acoustic reworkings for their "Unledded" DVD

                  When The Levee Breaks...

                  PS: It's a hurdy gurdy
A few splashes of grunge to the pot

Alice in Chains - No Excuses

                    Seether - The Gift

And probably my favourite acoustic song growing up

                    Pear Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

                      I still get goosebumbs... :yup:
I have to nominate staind - it's been awhile and suffer. His voice comes through so amazingly when they play accoustic sets.

Still trying to get used to this board, but anyway

Really love the sound of that. The Fray did a cover of Kanye West's Heartless, and it just sounds really good
well I don't like it that much but it's what came to mind first: Foo Fighters'-Skin and Bones album is some of their songs played live with acoustics. Does sound good though and very chill, not so many effects as usual
