I have just returned from The Gear Junkie in Durham Avenue Salt River,
with the foot switch I have been searching for.

Graham is a super friendly guy with lots of pre-loved stock
and very favourable prices...
Um sooo chuffed with my new switch. ?
Awwww yeah...you have both been thanked gentlemen!

Been looking for a store like this in Slaapstad. That's the best selection of nylon strings I've seen locally...guess where I'm off to tomorrow ?

Somewhat tempted by that Bass Pod Pro XT they have listed for R2k! Great tool for recording!

      Thanks for the headsup Manfred!

      Regards
      G!
Gaaaaaah! I need that fender champ! Except I'm halfway across the country :'(
          Thanks Mannie!

FYI, yesterday I ran across a guy in Hermanus selling some wonderful nylons - DiGiorgio, Ramirez, Picado and Rodriguez, etc. Even a Kohno. I saw him on GT, but he has a BoB store too: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/seller/2612212/Andrews_Online_Store
The Rickenbacker 650s is a beaut. Does anyone here have experience with one of these?
Yeah - I was also eyeing that one. ? Thats a 650S (Sierra) with walnut body and gold hardware. They don't pop up often. http://www.rickenbacker.com/model.asp?model=650S

The 650s have wider and slightly fatter necks than most Rics (which are painfully narrow and thin by most standards) - still not really wide or even remotely fat, and still an odd profile but better than most. Where they fall down is they have humbucking pickups, so stock they lack the traditional Ric twang.

Still, if you want the Ric tone in a more playable guitar, the 650 is it. Slap in some Hi-gains or Toasters to replace the 'buckers and you bring it to a more traditional Ric tonality.

Could always buy it and organize collection after? Where there is a will, there is a way.

Thanks for the link Alan - lovely guitars he has there! All waaaayyyy outta my price (and skill) range, I'd be embarrassed even to go have a look :-[

I did pop into The Gear Junkie, what a cool store Graeme is putting together there. Today is the second official day of trading and already was bumping into fellow forumites...

I can seriously recommend popping in for a browse and a coffee or even ordering your new gear through there. Graeme knows his stuff (ex Cresta Music Mate) and has all the connections for new gear if you want. The quote I got for a Focusrite Scarlett is easily the best I've found locally!

The second hand gear was what I wanted to check out. There was some play testing of a fender twin reverb vs bassman going on (both 60's vintage) - real cool to hear them A/B'ed with a TS-9 in the mix too. The USA maple neck strat @ R9k w/case sounded great through the amps and the 70's Fender Jazz bass (not on the website) is a beaut too...

I got to try out a few nylons - I thought I'd fall for the Hohner TWP thinline, but instead the Takamine grabbed my attention - real easy to play, and sounded good unplugged and plugged in - imho, way preferable over a NTX Yamaha.

                  All far too tempting. ☹

Yeah, I had one of those Hohners for a while. Not a bad guitar after a good setup, just the Schaller pickup and whatever preamp they are using don't do the guitar justice.

Nod, if I was any good @ fingerstyle it would be tempting. Lotta guitar for the money - Typically clubby Hohner neck, no pre-amp I could see (online info mention's it is preamp-less) & pronounced piezo'sound'. But I prefer to wack a nylon fakemenco style, which it didn't much like. Chet Atkins I'm not ?

I spent a really enjoyable hour or more at TGJ this morning. Graham is a really personable guy, obviously a gearhead without being an intimidating know-it-all, and just thrilled to sit and chat. Has some reals gems in there already. I know this is probably jinxing it, but with any luck this is going to become a CT institution for buying and selling gear and hanging out with chilled musos.

                        Two thumbs up!

                          +1

lol, just got back from chillin' there for a few hours after lunch. Tried my strat against a bunch of guit's - convinced me to hang onto my lady, sometimes it's good to remind yourself that what you have is what you want.

By any chance was that your Gibson LP Studio on the wall?

Heh, had a feeling it might be. Sweet guitar, real good price on it as well - I was saying to Graham that'll fly out the store.

The bridge pickup was just so AC/DC...Still prefer my strat though ?

                              First time poster, etc.

Just got back form The Gear Junkie myself. Brought home that Ibanez Artcore of theirs. I'm an archtop lover, it was close to my price range, shit had to happen!

I know some guitar players like to blah blah and chat at the shop, but Graham was cool enough to know that I just wanted to sit and play around with the guitars and let them sell themselves.

I mucked around for an hour before having this very long conversation with him after I asked him to tune it:
Me: Can we talk about this guitar?
                              G: Sure, what's up?
Me: I really dig it, but my budget was just XXXX. I'm willing to go up for this, what can you do?
G walks over to the counter: 'I can do XXXX' on that.
                              Me: Sold.

No blah blah, just to it. That's what I wanted, but he was there chatting folks up who wanted to chat. He's perceptive and that's what is going to help him succeed.

I am indeed the guy who bought it. Were you its former owner, or also lusting after it?
