  • looking at getting a bass - waddaya'll think of this amp?

orange crush pix 25-watter. for the foreseeable future, i'll be using the setup exclusively in-home and for my own experimentation and pleasure, primarily laying down bass lines for my own stuff.

thoughts? very affordable, around 1600 at marshalldirect

thanks

sounds good with a Squier P Bass...

Can't go wrong with an Orange. Not a bad price too.
It looks the business for noodling around at home, but for recording I see two potential issues which kinda overlap each other.... Firstly, it only has an 8" speaker, which will seriously impact the low end, and with no option to add an extension cab, so the option to use it with a larger speaker is out. Granted its only at low wattage so these concerns may not be relevant, and the little fella may hold out, but I don't think it'll give you a good sound for recording, which would lead to my next point....

The line out. Ideally you want an actual DI output which will give better results. In my experience, the 'line output' jack method tends to deliver thin and whispy sounding signals, so that would be something to look out for.

As I say, these may not be an issue, as Orange have made some serious improvements on the mini amp spectrum of late, so it may be a pleasant surprise, and having not actually tried this amp myself, I cannot give an accurate telling of its capabilities, but these would be the two things I would be looking at straight away.

        Regards
        G!
thanks all, it definitely goes in the 'consideration set', as they say. as far as the recording side of things goes, i'd not be looking to mic this one up immediately - probably just plug the bass directly into my kb37 and use the modelling amps and fx in there for the mean time.

although, i'll definitely experiment, no matter which amp i go for.

          thanks again

            +1 to Big G.

For recording on a budget, I'd rather get a decent DI box and use software for tonal shaping.
the 50 watt crush aint much more money, may be the better option

just a query, is the marshalldirect pricing still current?

+1 for recording, get a decent di box into your soundcard.
I love the countryman but lately have been using a sansamp di and a Palmer di

The countryman with a P bass will prob still be the winner for the album, that combo just gives me a great transparent thump sound ?

Friend of mine was looking at for an affordable bass amp last week, so I went and played on a couple of entry level amps. I must say even though I love orange amps and owns one (guitar amp though) the pix 25 did not impress me one bit.

It sounds like a practice amp, nothing more! Marshall music in woodmead quoted me R1200 for it which is pretty cheap but I personally would not buy this particular model. I would rather go for something like the Warwick BC20. They quoted me R1600 on that amp. All though its 5w less and definitely quieter than the orange the tone is far supperior on the bc20. It actually sounds like a bass amp even with the volume open all the way. Which is pretty difficult to do with a 8" driver.

                  Hope this helps

looked at the andy irvine demo on youtube on the bc 20. very nice. naturally, he's a warwick endorsee, so he has to say good stuff about the thing, but it's another one to put in that old 'consideration set'. (sorry, it's been a year for business clichés and bs bingo.)

i think a trip down to marshall is in order. there appear to be quite a few nice little amps in my price range.

thanks for all the input folkses, much appreciated

If you can stretch the budget a bit, I would say take a look at the TC Electronic kit. Its very good value for money, and seriously impressive sounding. May be beyond your budget, but that extra would be very well spent if you can muster it. Another one to consider would be the Gallien Krueger 2x12" or 2x10" combo's. They are very reasonably priced, and light too! Again though, they are probably a fair bit outside your price range, but well worth considering!

I checked out those Warwick ones and the bass response for those tiny speakers is really mind blowing! I was seriously impressed with it. I wouldn't go elsewhere for a cheap practice amp.
