I am Wiehann. I live in Pretoria. I want to learn how to play bass Guitar. I have never played a musical instrument in my life.

Can anyone give some advice on what I should be looking for?

1st. A teacher. Others here should be able to point you to one close by.
2nd: You'll prob need a bass and a small amp. I bought my GF a 15watt Ashdown bass amp. Its tiny but it sounds pretty good and it was cheap (less than R1k). With instruments, others will tell you too, get second hand as far as you can, they'll be cheaper and you get something better for the same money as a new one.

I am currently on the look out for a Bass Guitar and amp. Will pop around a few shops this weekend to get a nice feel of a few brands.

My friend has a very nice music teacher, which I will approach as soon as I have bought a Bass and amp!

Just when shopping for your bass, please do take someone along who knows a thing or two about bass guitars. When buying my first guitar I went alone and walked out with a POS of note which I regretted for a long time...

word of advice..........don't write off the second hand market....tonnes of good deals on solid instruments.

I am a bass player primarily and I think it's just the best place to start. My humble and quite uneducated opinion.

I checked out some Warwick practice amps at music connection and I was absolutely blown away at the powerful low end that you can get out of those tiny things! If I hadn't gotten the deal on my amp that I did, I would definitely go for one of those first. When starting out, low end was what I enjoyed hearing in my bass amp. A lot of bass amp, even more expensive one don't give the low end like those!

Just a word of advise, just as the birds fly at the call of danger, sometimes fighting when everyone is running is as silly as beating a tree with a stick!

howdy. and welcome. you'll notice wirt has advised you to take someone with when purchasing your bass. this is brilliant advice. may i suggest further that you find yourself a teacher, and find out whether he/she will accompany you (ha ha, i made a musical funny) on your search for your first bass. good bonding, and a teacher who will help you find your first bass is a) definitely willing to invest time in his/her student and b) probably an all-round decent human being.
