  • Driving to Cape Town - suggestions for new music please?

Just drove from Hermanus To Cape Town with my thirty something niece and we listened to some of her music - Pearl Jam (love them) followed by the soundtrack from The Twilight Saga. Now I haven't watched the movies or anything but some of this music was quite amazing. Lot's of male vocalists with really good voices I thought .... maybe it was the mountains ? and finished off with some Coldplay.
Have a good trip!
Van Morrison's Astral Weeks and JJ Cale's Okie have done that trip many times over the last 30 plus years in my cars. Never get tired of them.
      5 days later
Im going to recommend my own band STRAGE.
http://www.strage.co.za has it all for free and easy download. Forum members may be interested to take a listen and check out how I recorded it (notes are on the site)
The music is instrumental and varies in dynamics from very soft and light to heavy. It's also very slow. I think it should suit a long drive very well.
Ok so I probably picked a boring list for some but think this will do - have downloaded alredy (some rom Itunes SA and some some from USA). A few of these I have been waiting for the right time to buy:

Melissa Greener - Dwelling & also Fall From The Sky
Sonny Landreth - South of 1-10
        Tab Benoit - Legacy
Kenny Wayne Shepherd - How I go
        Daniel Lanois - Acadia
Scorpions - Comeback & Acoustica combo
The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow

        Still looking at 2-3 more...

Can't go wrong with the Gaslight Anthem - great American working class rock, think Springsteen, that is perfect driving music - I would pick their album the 59 Sound but all are good
Thx for all the suggestions - still need a few more though.

As I stated in the opening post: "preferably artists that I am NOT that familiar with". Some well known suggestons that I have already but that's fine.

I get the impression you're in the same kind age bracket as myself so you're already familiar with the old seventees bands and I'd be hard pressed to find something that's new to you.

I know there is a HUGE selection from Joe Bonamassa or Black Country Communion that would work well for driving, only problem is, it could cause the right foot to press a little harder that necessary... ?
                When are you driving Roy?
I have just arrived in Colesburg where I will be overnighting (The first time I've done this in the last 15 years - always leave at 11pm and drive straight which I bought a while ago and have waited until this trip to play them eg John Mayer's Born & Raised etc

I only "discovered" Melissa Greener and Paul O'Brien from guitar makers demo videos on their websites. Melissa plays Michael Greenfield guitars andI came across Paul O'Brien demo'ing guitars from BSG Guitars
Try the new Shins album 'Port of Morrow' I'm really enjoying this at the moment, also The Thrills ' So much for the City' and 'Teenager'. Both these have great 60's elements which make is a great choice for summer road trips. Check out Pheonix albums too, great stuff there.
