OK I am asking from a very ignorant perspective here.
Why is it that whenever some classical purist finds out that my nylon string has a cutaway, I have to hand them a paper bag to breathe into and I receive a restraining order a month later?

    1. Traditionally classical guitars doesn't have cutaways.
    2. The person in question believes they will be able to hear the difference
    3. The oke is so surprised that he did not hear the difference that he has to go off on you to make himself feel better.

    I have no knowledge of this stuff, the above is just my opinion

          Please just tell the purists that behave like you describe, that milennia ago Torres has already proven that
          - back/sides material does not matter;
          - shape does not particularly matter as long as the soundboard does not change behaviour.

          Tell them that in modern thinking the stiff section of the top (where your cutaway has come in) does not contribute to tone. As long as the body volume is the same, there will be less change in tone than there will be between guitars made of different pieces of wood from the same tree. Hence the Ovation plastic bowl and sound holes opposite the cutaway, even on nylon strings.

          If you really want the scientific background read "left brain lutherie" by David Hurd. I haven't finished it but from what I have finished so far, I'd say it's a useful read for those who want to build an acoustic and know what it's going to sound like.

                Dont worry Conrad, at least you can comfortably play past the 12th fret. I had a "Takamine" nylon cutaway that had such a good sound, unplugged or plugged in, but there was the occasional gasp from the purists.
                What would the purists say about the guitar Bob Dubery having built, have a look in his posts about it.

                      What Takamine acoustic do you have?
                        Takamine FP325SRCA , and early 90's model that cost me an arm and a leg in 1997, I paid about R8000 for it 2nd hand.
                        I had my mind set on an Ovation , mostly because I had never had one and the plugged in sound was good.
                        But the day I went to get my Ovation, I decided to play all the acoustics in the shop. The Ovation was horrible!
                        I finally chose the Takamine, I would make the same choice today.

                          I have a 1997 Takamine G series LOL. I put a little tube pre amp in it.
