Lucky.. I'm certainly going to investigate this.. I was sure that used items get past - maybe I'm wrong.rikus wrote:Very strange... my used amp I bought recently from musician's friend was delivered straight to my door... no extra fees of any sort. It definitely went through customs as it had been opened and retaped with "inspection" tape.zohn wrote:I thought so too when I bought my "demo" Canteri. I made sure Luca marked it clearly as used, but to no avail - I raised a query and a dude from "the hub" at the airport in Kempton called me to explain that VAT was indeed payable on used items as well - a neat R2800. It sucks...epictring wrote: Cool it's here! I received a call today and they want me to pay VAT, I thought USED items do not qualify for VAT? It was like 1k.
Anyway, it's delivering on Monday ?
But still wondering about the VAT, I'm not so familiar with how this works?
The only way you won't pay anything is if you bring it in from overseas, don't declare it at customs and they let you through.
Buying used from Musiciansfriend
? Well it certainly looked like it could have fallen from a truck along the way by the time that I got it:zohn wrote: Well then maybe there is a "fell from the truck-route" after all... ?

That doesn't look like a Roland Juno-Gi Keyboard's box? ?
ahem... I'm the dude who ordered the Roland :? - it's here on Monday, amped!Scorched wrote: That doesn't look like a Roland Juno-Gi Keyboard's box? ?
It still has a banner saying free shipping over $25 but when I go to checkout its saying shipping is $110! >
I've selected used gear, and it will ship, but I dont want to pay shipping when its meant to be free...my items come to $270 so its not as if Im buying something for $5...

That's weird.. make sure you enter you country and area code on the "My Cart" screen at the bottom under "Shipping Options". Otherwise, email them, they are friendly and helpful.Kalcium wrote: It still has a banner saying free shipping over $25 but when I go to checkout its saying shipping is $110! >I've selected used gear, and it will ship, but I dont want to pay shipping when its meant to be free...my items come to $270 so its not as if Im buying something for $5...
Still wants to charge me :/ Try ordering something and see if it gives you the same problem when you go to checkout? Of course you dont have to actually buy, but if you could check and let me know...
I checked it already with the same used Roland Juno-Gi keyboards and it gives free shipping for me. However, the Juno's are about $800. I'm not 100% sure what they're minimum is before it becomes free.Kalcium wrote: Still wants to charge me :/ Try ordering something and see if it gives you the same problem when you go to checkout? Brain-fart! :-[ahem... I'm the dude who ordered the Roland Roll Eyes - it's here on Monday, amped!

I bought a used Fender Strat from Muscians Friend, free shipping. Paid on Thursday evening and it was delivered the next Tuesday! - I had to pay the Vat. There was nothing used about this guitar - plays like a dream. ?
The shipping is actually surprisingly fast. Right after I ordered, I emailed them and asked what shipping method they use.allwillc wrote: I bought a used Fender Strat from Muscians Friend, free shipping. "Thank you for recent inquiry.
Since it is going international, it will be shipped via First Class International, keep in mind that with international orders can take up to 30 days to ship. As mentioned in the previous email, it is not able to be tracked but a delivery confirmation will be available upon reaching the destination. "
I was very dissapointed when I saw it was using First Class, since I know from experience it seriously does take a month to arrive. But then it took a week and I got the call from UPS - very happy!
Hmm... Look what arrived today.

Update: I honestly don't get how this can be called "used"? Can't tell the difference, all the manuals/CD's and everything is packaged as it would be in the new box (btw. came with original box as well).

Congrats and enjoy!!
Thank you.. This thing is insane!zohn wrote: Ja I'm glad for you man! ? - so did you have to cough up for VAT/added costs?
Unfortunately yes, it seems there's no way around it at all - there's no "duties" on it though, just VAT.
But it was still an INSANE deal, I saw a second hand one go (in SA) for 10k (badly used) and the one I got was seriously as good as new (not a scratch).
If you wanna work out how much it's gonna cost total, use this site (Duty Calculator):
www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/
In my experience it's very accurate, works out exactly what I paid.

Sorry to bump a month or 2 old thread.
But I want to buy a 60lb combo amp from musiciansfriend. Just wondering if anyones had any issues with their free shipping if something is just down right heavy! My order comes to just over $500, and shipping seems free.

Someone bought a combo amp from them on free shipping and it came through great. Totally worth it, I reckon.SnapcaseZA wrote: Sorry to bump a month or 2 old thread.

Great! It ends up less than half the price of buying one here. Unbelievable, I just keep thinking there's a catch.singemonkey wrote:Someone bought a combo amp from them on free shipping and it came through great. Totally worth it, I reckon.SnapcaseZA wrote: Sorry to bump a month or 2 old thread.

Like I'm gonna put the order through then they're going to charge me shipping all of a sudden and double the cost.
Just don't forget, you will most likely be charged VAT and maybe duty when Customs gets hold of it, should still be a decent price though. Let us know how it goes!
I used that import calculator, and tax + duties come to R600.Clint Green wrote: Just don't forget, you will most likely be charged VAT and maybe duty when Customs gets hold of it, should still be a decent price though. Let us know how it goes!
I'm hoping to get a Peavey 6505 1x12 60W combo, and its going for $479. It looks promising that I could get it to my door for less than R4600, which is a crazy good bargain. I'll just also have to get the power transformer redone for 230V but thats not an issue. A few hundred.
