We have no rules against it, but preferably not - kind of defeats the whole purpose of entering.
It does doesn't it. The last reggae challenge wasn't Jamaican either. The Jazz Crusaders had an awesome song called Jamaica *runs for inspiration*

But entering IS practice. Try it, and if you're not happy with what you did then don't submit.

And to continue with Don's post - or just submit it anyway to track your progress ?
I think I'll give this one a bash.

"Island" Reggae usually refers to Reggae released on the Island record label. Covers a wide variety of styles from The Wailers to Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Careful with that, because Island was originaly set up to make music from the West Indies available in the UK and early on they would have been distributing Rock Steady, Ska and the like. People get into arguments about wether something is Reggae or Rock Steady.
I have no idea what rock steady or ska is... but I know what Madness is ? ... but I won't be playing that.

Can someone tell me what those genres actually are please?

Don't worry about it for the comp - just you your own interpretation of reggae.

When I said Island style I had no idea about the Island records reference, a little voice in my had said that just sounds right. Reggae is anything that sounds like Wong chaka chaka chaka chaka as for as I'm concerned

is this comp and all rounder or should we label it as beginner/intermediate/advanced ?
i can remember last time was a big mix up

Shouldn't have been Manfred. It doesn't get much clearer than this. ?

I agree with Manfred, it can and does become confusing.
If you are going to go with the three catagories you will have to break the competition into the three sections.
So, effectively you will have 3 competitions, 1 for each catagory.
When you post the entries post them seperately into their respective catagories.
Trouble here is, if you got say 5 entries, 1 beginner and 4 advanced, the 1 catagorie becomes a no contest.
And, quite frankly, I think most entrants are confused as to which catagorie they belong to in the first place anyway.
                                Dunno, just my opinion.
