I do not gig live anymore. I would love to do it again though. I'm doing some composing for indie films from time to time - when I have the time. Most of what I do is for the pleasure.

Alan, I understand what you are saying about upgrading. I am a bot in that groove of upgrading just because there is a new version. I have to adkit V7 was a waste, but I really liked the Z3ta+ synth that is included, so I went for it.

I wish I had such an understanding wife. She do not mind me spending money, but it usually end up in a one-for-you = one-for-me and her diamond rings are more expensive than my guitars. My idea with guitars are just to get some that sound sufficiently different from the others when I record them, so I have an accoustic, round-back accoustic, Nylon string accoustic, stratocaster and a bass plus one to bang around at braais.

The main computer is a dual monitor system with Sonar Producer Edition software system with softsynths (GPO, EWQL, etc). The second computer is for internet access, graphics and video systems (still running Adobe Premiere Pro) and all the other little utilities that is needed.

The main computer is 4 years old and is the one in serious need up upgrading.

You have a similar setup to mine sepheritoh. I put in a KVR switch recently to swap keyboard and mouse between the two PCs, which cleared up some deskspace (as did moving to LCD displays). I only have a single monitor on each machine though - been toying with the idea of switching one of the monitors too, so I can have a dual display on the audio machine. That means finding an AGP dual display card though, or a second card which would need to be PCI-based.

What are your machines? I'm finding my older machines are holding up surprisingly well (3GHz P4 for audio & 1.8GHz for work), if a little strained. Both were originally built for audio and each part carefully selected, and it seems to have paid off in the long run - both are very reliable.

Still, I would like to upgrade the audio machine to a Core Duo in the next few months - which means my old audio machine will become my work one (and work one becomes my proxy/mailserver, and proxy becomes my daughters - it's a whole "trickle-down effect" in my house when I add a new machine ? ).

My macines are both Mecer P4 2.8khz. I use a Nvidia 5300 graphics card with dual head. The idea for the KVM switch is a good one to save space and to get rid of the 3rd screen.

I use GPO and EWQL SO Gold for composing. This comes down to a lot of freezing of tracks. 2GB ram is not enough for EWQL and the mobo has 2 memory slots only, so I can not so easilly add more memory. It has 3 hard drives. 30GB for windows, 250GB for audio recording and 500GB for sample libraries. The computer can handle audio tracks pretty well, but start to crackle when I add too many effects. That brings latency down to 7ms at best, but sometimes I have to bring it down to 21ms latency if I do not want to freeze all the time. That is mildly irritating to record with 7ms, but at 21ms it becomes a joke.

I'm also using Sonar PE and have just upgraded to 7. I love the program.
I also have a fairly old PC - AMD Athlon 3GHz. I'm waiting for VISTA to become more stable and will probably upgrade in the next year or so.

Sonar 7 has some nice new additions - z3ta being one. I also bought dimension pro, which is awesome.

On both accounts I agree. I bought dim pro when I upgraded to Sonar 6 and it is still one of my most used synths. Z3ta is just as amazing. I just can not stop myself playing around with it. Sonar 7 also ships with Rapture LE which has plenty amazing sounds as well.
