  • Dan Patlansky - Live and Album: Heal My Soul

Saw Dan play for the first time on Saturday night at Tanz Cafe.

I'm sure most of you are familiar with his stuff, but hell he's a great player. First time I've seen him live. The people sitting at our table (we banded together against the shortage of chairs) were gob-smacked ? If you haven't seen him live, then I strongly suggest you make a plan to catch him sometime. He's often at the Blues Room in JHB, and apparently is going to be heading around the country over the next few weeks.

Obviously blues enthusiasts will enjoy it most, but anyone into the guitar should get a kick out of his performance. He has great dynamics, and pulls off some very effective bits of showmanship. It's all underpinned by some great songs, and he's got the perfect voice for rasping through those heavy blues numbers. On top of it all, he seems a very humble bloke: genuinely appreciative of his audience and very receptive to his fans.

Picked up his new CD too (Heal My Soul), enjoying it muchly! If you like SRV type stuff then you'll definitely enjoy this one. The instrumental track 9, Luca is just wonderful. Love it ?
I fully agree , but I found him way too loud....
If it's too loud, you are too old ?

Dan is amazing, saw him live at Die Boer in Durbanville some time back, he blew my socks off, and I'm still barefoot!

        ???

I don't think this was a problem with him specifically. I've found a lot of acts at Tanz (well, it's the old Tanz now, keen to see the new one) to be much too loud, considering the space and the proximity of the audience to the speakers etc. We were sitting on the left of the stage near the bar, so at least weren't being assaulted directly by the speakers.

Most often found the drums to be the biggest culprit, and this was true on Saturday as well. Very top heavy, so that when they really start giving it horns the snare in particular was much too hectic.

Keen to see him at the Blues room sometime. I've never been there so I don't know if the sound is any better.

The sound there (Blues Room) is usually pretty good, actually, despite the layout being abysmal for live music.

I saw Boulevard Blues Band @ Die Boer in Durbanville last year. That venue is similar in size and layout to Tanz , but the sound levels were more beareable , thus allowing one to enjoy the music much more. :-[....my opinion.

I thought my experience there a couple of weeks back was abysmal.

                let me explain.

Booked table for 3, got there, sorry we weren't even on the list. so luckily someone canceled, we got their table right at the back.

                Wasn't worried.

Them Particles played then Dan, all I could hear was talking and partying going on around me, no one was really there to watch it seemed...
and the waiters walk around all the time during the show and stand in front of you.
The food was useless, minced bbq chicken livers with 2 slices of toast on top of it... 'nuf said

I never wanted to go there, but two of my mates where keen to watch and I tagged along.

I have said it before, but this is definitely the last time, I wont go there again... sadly

Ja, look, there are quite a number of factors working against a good experience there: when I've played there I've been aware that the people most interested in listening are actually BEHIND you, at the bar, or out along the sides in the passageway, trying to catch a glimpse of what's going on between the pillars. And then the sound can't be too loud so that the people paying exorbitant prices for eats and drinks don't lose their chicken livers down their shirt-fronts thanks to a fully cranked PA system. Having said that, at least the sound was crystal clear on the occasions I've experienced (I once forgot to put my earplugs in, and no problem - even the monitoring was great). Tables in front of a stage doesn't work for me; nor do R20 cordial mixers. But I guess that's Sandton...
Dan is playing Die Boer in Durbanville again on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of July, I just booked my table. The sound is always spot on there, I would recommend this to anyone in the area.
Dan has indicated to us that he would like to join us for a set at TJ's this month, just like way back.

We do low budget hillbilly sh*t, and he comes in with his hundred mile an hour acoustic breaks. Makes for interesting combinations. I usually fall off the rails and forget what I should be playing.

I will let you know if he confirms closer to the time.
Dan rocks! I have his "REAL" album, enjoy it very much...will have to try and find the new album. ?
                          All

Dan's new album is 'MOVE my Soul' ....Heal My Soul is close but not quite correct ? .....

Saw Dan play at the Blues room a few months back and was blown away, even though I already saw him at the 2007 Guitarfest where he put on an amazing performance as well. This guy is an absolutely amazing guitarist....absolutely and completely world class. It is well worth the money to go and see this guy is he is playing near you....in fact if he is playing anywhere.

I will definitely go back to see him at the Blues room (or may even try Tanz), despite agreeing with the comments concerning food and service at the Blues Room...Dan's music more than made up for it (even his opening act - Meri Ke - was refreshingly original). I had a few friends who had never even heard of him and they were instant converts. They couldn't believe we had such talent in SA....their words not mine.

                          Cheers

                            Oops! :-[

My mistake. One of those occasions where my mind read something else to what was written. ?

Saw Dan last night at Die Boer, Durbanville.

First a note about the venue - probably the best live music venue I've ever been to. It's been built from the ground up with the focus on the artists - sound is good, good view of the stage, small/intimate setting, just really great. Everyone is seated for the duration of the show though, so people who like to get up and move might not like it that much ? but for watching/listening to/taking in the artist, it's perfect.

About Dan: Really, really amazing. Anyone who plays guitar owes it to themselves to go see him play. Great showman, great tone, great songwriting, great voice, great everything ?

Also: I took a pic of his pedalboard, if anyone cares (how to spot the GFSA member at a gig...). Kind of difficult to get the pic on my pc (touchscreen phone with cracked screen.)
I was also there last night and it was a blast (Literally... dunno about you, but my ears were feeling it at the end of the night, he really cranked his amp last night :bopping?!

It was my third time seeing him at the Boer, and it's always great! I'd love to see the pic of the pedal board, it seems that it's no longer just the wah and TS combo, but he sounded great!

Ps. I really enjoyed the guest he brought up after the break, she's got such a great voice and she can play! She really got the place going and she and Dan were going back and forth nicely!
He uses a TU 2, a wah with a name I can't remember, a Keeley 2 knob compressor, an MI Audio Blue Boy Deluxe and Blues Pro, all powered by a T Rex Juicy Lucy.

                                  Guess who's a fanboy?

                                  :?

Danny is spot on. The wah Dan uses is a Teese RMC. ?
I was at that The Boer gig on Thursday as well ? Incredible player, epic facial expressions ?
