  • Marshall Woodmead Sale - 1 & 2 August

Hey guys, Just got this in my inbox. For those of you that will have some spare bucks :D
I just got it too. I wonder if they are doing the same in Cape Town? I'm going to stop in there tomorrow and I'll find out while I'm there.
If the Cape Town branch is also having a sale, please DON'T tell me.... ?
        Ok...see you guys there! ?

Cool store. What a great video!

Graeme ['I've got stacks of guitars'] there is the guy that sold me my Ibanez ZS 320 - cool guitar, hey Norio???? ? ? Told him what my budget and requirements for a guitar were, and just got great, practical no-nonsense advice from the guy. Never felt I was being played for a sale or to buy a more expensive guitar than I could afford. Totally non-threatening and a good experience.

Bought my PA speakers there and also got a good deal.

Damn, I know where I'm gonna be on Friday!!!! My wife is going to kill me. I've learnt to hide my new gear at work and in the garage for a few weeks, and then to just sort of blend it into my room gradually over time. If I get busted, I usually have to fork out for a quid pro quo pair of shoes or something, but hey, it's worth it!! ?

          Cheers

Shoes for gear?! You hit the jackpot man! I have to buy my wifey lenses, digital cameras, lighting, processing chemicals and more ?

I admire your skill in pulling that one off, with your wife being the other half of the band! A master at work...!

I've done the same after buying two guitars on Ebay and telling my wife about only one of them...

Sounds like it might be worth a visit...

Chances are though that I'll spend money I can't afford to if I do go through.

Me thinks I shall pay them a visit on friday - if i can find the place.
I did not read this thread, there is no sale in CPT, must resist, must resist...

Yeah, she's a vocalist, and happy with a mic-stand and her Beta 58A. Ilike to keep the other stuff a mystery to her - LOL - and now you know why!!! ?

I'm not really that bad, promise. But she likes to buy 'stage clothes' (and I'm pretty sure she uses my fleecing trick too!!) - so i just wear the same jeans and slip in the odd cool toy from time to time. Bought a killer Fender Gold guitar cable (http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0990712001) and swopped it for my Cort cables. She won't notice, but man can I hear the difference!!

So we basically have a good two-way working relationship!!

? My wife just lets me buy whatever I think I need and can afford and buys me the occasional guitar and mics and things. I treat her the same with lenses and such. We're both gear, gadget and computer junkies, so we understand each other. ?

Match made in heaven ... I'm gonna mend my evil ways and take the mature approach soon, I promise!

Keep warm. Wonder if we're gonna have a fun Friday thread tomorrow?

just came back from the CT sale. Very cool. ESP Horisons are R10500 with case and the Taylor solid-body electrics are less 30%, so roughly between 20k and 15k. some good deals on studio monitors but the rest of the studio gear is not on sale ? ☹ >☹

good deals on yamaha electric drum kits as well. i skipped the bass department and the amps, but the effects are also looking good. those Hardwire pedals are about R1500 on sale.

that's about all i looked at
                            OK

So i was at this sale .... I take pride in doing research on guitars, amps etc including their retail prices. Now i went to marshall on saturday and i saw some dodgy things, the retail prices on some equipment was pushed up ... mostly amps. A Marshall TSL601 ( Normally retails for bout 13k was marked up to 16k) and marshall amps was on 40% discount. The trick is, they tricked allot of suckers into buying stuff at normal discount prices by upping the price and then giving big discount ( NOT COOL ).

This however does not mean i didn't buy anything, i bought my korg pandora PX5D for R2000 which was R200 cheaper than i get from my normal contacts.

Last years sale was allot cheaper tho, but i know allot of other shops caused trouble because the sale prices was lower than what they bought from them which basicly stuffed up the music equipment market up big time last year.
Mmmm thats not nice! Thanks for lettings us know. To be honest I am getting quite gatvol with these moaning music stores. In my book as long as everyone gets the stuff from the same supplier and there is no trickery involved where one shop gets it for WAY cheaper than the rest they should all shut the hell up, a special is a special. You mark down some of your items as "lures" to get people in your shop, and yes sometimes way below their cost price. If they want everyone to charge the same prices they might as well all become partners and open branches of the same store countrywide and stock exactly the same stuff at the same prices... Twits
This is a marketing strategy that has worked for shops like Edgards for decades. People are going all woobly in their constitution when they see the words "sale". There is nothing illegal about companies taking advantage of people's gullibility. The moral of it is something else however.

If they do this becasue of preasure from other shops to keep prices high - that however is plain illigal. Many large corporations has been fined for price fixing. If what you are saying is true, I hope Marshall do not get away with it and get treated like any other business before the law.
I could go on forever about this...

In the Auto sector we have numerous accessory stores all selling very much the same thing, supplied by the same sweatshops in Chinalandville. There is however one store that has made it through all the storms and floods of the industry. Their business principle is simple - Low margins, high volumes.

This can work for the music industry too. Imagine how many more quality guitarists we'd have if a Strat cost R2000? or a Marshal 100w sold for R1000? A quality instrument that's inspiring to play for a reasonable price. It would make it that much more accessible to the masses, and who knows what hidden talent is out there? Sure you'd have a number of duds but the odds weight well in favour. Imagine how creative you'd have to get to make it in a world where there's 50% more musicians.

Suddenly you're almost forcing people to spend money on equipment because it's just so cost effective. The stores will still make money, possibly more than before due to the increased volumes. In a day and age where musical instruments are a luxury and belts are being tightened - value for money can make even the stingiest Scot part with his money.

If one shop does it, the rest will have no choice but to follow. All of a sudden, you have stores realizing that it's not the product that keeps business, the client can get it at the same 10% markup anywhere else, but it's their service that brings the client back. Just imagine the service you'll receive...?

Francis, I can pretty much bet that after going to the sale when you saw the price manipulation, you'll think twice before going back to them... Quality service brings clients back, not products.
If you want to do something about it, contact Marshall Amplification and their local agent and complain. The industry hates this kind of underhanded dealing as much as they do price cutting - either way affects the brand.

@ Spyke. Wouldn't work. The high volumes are not there, even with price cutting. Your car accessory stores do not have the same high end, expensive to produce products that require many millions of Rands in stockholding, and that turns over quite slowly. There would be an initial rush then it would taper off to the same number of sales, but at a lower margin. The stores already struggle to survive in a dip in the economy (like we have at the moment), cutting the prices would put them at a huge risk.

...and you're supposed to have the same price and discount structure everywhere. But some undermine that just to get a sale, which is good in the short run, but does not work in the long run.
                                      Hold on here,

Music stores are not like edgars. Manufacturers sell stuff and give a RRP ( Recommended retail price ) which is great. So all stores have to sell stuff at same price. But you get discount which is fine. Marshall music is basicly the importers of some equipment ( They have an importer/distributor store which i cant recall the name off ). Last year, marshall sold stuff at COST price to people which stuffed up the market. This sounds like a great thing ? Well its not, they formed a monopoly for 2 days and stuffed up the market for months. This year however, they didnt do the same, they marked it up and then marked it as sale which is dodgy. Atleast i knew the prices of the equipment so i didnt buy anything at those kak prices.
