Bob-Dubery
Where: Marks Park sports club, Judith Road, Emmarentia, Johannesburg
When: 8 pm, Thursday 28th
Admission: R20
A good opportunity for those of you who have taken a New Years resolution to perform in front of an audience.
You need yourself, your guitar, 3 songs (be optimistic, have a 4th ready for an encore).
TJs provide PA, microphones and leads into their mixer.
Drinks and meals can be ordered from the club.
Come on! You promised it to yourself. The audience here is very supportive, nobody's going to pelt you with anything.

Three whole songs?! In a week?! You gotta be kidding me ?

OK... they give you time for three. You could play just one. It has been known to happen. If they are oversubscribed they may ask people to cut back a little so that everybody can get a go.

I'll stick to the shadows for now ? It's too nerve-wrecking to do without something properly prepared. (And even then, it's kak-scary!)

Come on norio... wing it ? That way you can go nah-uh... I practiced that all week
NorioDS
Hehehehe ? I'd wing it for ONE song. Not three!

They say that playing at TJs is scary because the audience keeps dead quiet while you play. Must be the only venue in Jhb where that happens.

yeah but Tj's is a great starting ground for anyone cos they supportive of all the acts.from beginners to pro's and yeah i will second what Bob said that those wanting to try live playing come and try out ...... it's a way safe enviroment........ and also a great place to meet some very talented musicians too.... rather have your 1st gig at TJ's than some venue where you could get heckled by a drunk punter....
i'm prob not gonna be able to make it to TJ's this week but they well worth supporting .......... and as Bob said even just go do one song ..it's all worth it ........

Just such a great idea that is. What's the plan?

heya guys and gals..... thought we would see a few more peeps at the TJ's ....... Bob , fingerpicker and i were there from forum.... it was fun as ussual but was hoping to see some more faces....... and hear em play .......
well next one is in a month ..
well those that did not make it missed Bob, doing his way cool fingestyle storytelling ......... with a fab song called "Dragging the river for you " a hillerious but black song about a jealous man murdering the woman who left him ....... and then 2 others ....
i got to do my ussual percussion/multi part fingerstyle thing...... and this time deviated from playing purely my own compositions and played one of my own ...and then i did a jazzy medley of take 5 (dave brubeck) and mannenberg (abdulah ibrahim)
then fingerpicker almost escaped without playing but i was asked to end the night with a another song or two and i twisted his very pliable arm to play blues with me......... and we ended up doing a spontaneous busk....... he ended up doing a song solo while i set up and then we jammed and had fun......
so yeah a good time was had by all it seems.......
just hope to see more new people there next time......

TJs really want to look for new blood and to provide a platform for people to dip a first toe into the waters of live performance. So over to y'all.
The next open mic night will be the last Thursday of February - the twenty fifth. All those wanting to play will get a MAXIMUM of three numbers, but can do less. TJs are very supportive and will help with positioning of microphones etc.
I had a gas there last night. You know, that audience really WANTS to enjoy themselves and to whoop and holler and encourage, which makes it easier for the people playing.

There I was, having helped some mates out with some harmonies in Colours, Sweet Baby James and Helplessly Hoping in the the first set of the evening, keeping a low profile at the back of the room, when all of a sardine I get dragged into the bright lights by Keira "hundred mile an hour" Witherkay for some blues jamming. I think we ended up doing a flamenco blues version of "Roll your own" and "Cakewalk into town". It was scary, but fun.
Someone said afterwards, "how long have you guys been playing together?"
"About 15 minutes," I said
If Keira ever asks you to play with her, do it. She does most of the work, you just have to play a few notes and do the face twitch thing...

Must mention X Rated Bob here. He is going from strength to strength and is improving with each outing. The Larrivee sounded deadly with the new pickup and he did some scary picking.
As I say, live performing is where the rubber meets the road...
