Ok, so last night I sat jamming to "Rumours" with Fleetwood Mac, then I remembered, hang on, I just bought Joe Bonamassa "Live at Rock Palast" ........I've never really heard him play, but hell.....can that boy play Blues, Rock and whatever else.......I played the DVD twice!!!!!!! ? ? ....... had to really get into his version of "Had To Cry Today", because I also have the original version by Blind Faith......anyone remember Blind Faith? (Steve Winwood is one of my favourite songwriters!)......But the boy (Joe) is awesome!!!!
And who said something about the "playability" of a Gibson Les Paul ??? Go watch and listen to Joe Bonamassa!!!!!!!! Hahahahaha...... ? ? ? ?
I am impressed!!!!

Couple of months back in Guitarist mag ol Gary Moore had some not so nice things to say about Bonamassa in an interview. I got the Bad for you Baby album and imo I think Gary Moore has got a ways to go to get near to JB.

Joe Bonamassa is one of my favorites.
Wonderful guitarist and tone to die for. I like his blues rock and listen to it at least once a week... I'm a big Bonamassa fan.
His newest album, The Ballad of John Henry is what I am trying to tackle at the moment. :?
There are videos of him playing with Buddy Guy when is 12 years old (I think) ? Crazy

My introduction to JB was Tea For One (LedZep... Presence) and every number he plays now just blows me away... (I never felt that way about Gary Moore... :-\)

From another big Bonamassa fan:
"Joe Bonamassa has won the Guitar Players Reader's Choice Award BEST BLUES GUITARIST for 2008 (second year in a row) "... Found it on his site. So I reckon the guy can play?! Haha ?

After listening to a few tracks on Youtube, I thought I'd go buy a CD or 2 of his. R300 a shot - is he that good ?
I'm all for supporting local businesses, but I think I'll order these overseas.
Ray
Sloe Gin and Ballad Of John Henry both under R200-00 at Kalahari.
Squonk
At Clearwater Mall, Look and listen, they had these albums for under R200, a couple of weeks ago.
Maybe check look and listen first

I'll go check some places this weekend. I only did a quick pop into Musica this time around.

If you like Joe Bonamassa, you'll (probably) like a young British guy called Aynsley Lister - just got his new album (equilibrium) and it's pretty cool. There is some of his stuff on youtube, but not a lot. Of the two I prefer Lister, but that's just my opinion, not that I find JB anything less than superb !

Joe Bonamassa is a phenomenal guitarist, and I'll also vouch for Aynsley Lister. If you like this kind of stuff, or more traditional blues I'd also recommend Kenny Wayne Sheppard in general, and his "10 Days Out (Blues from The Backroads)" album of collaborations too.

There's another guy called David Grissom, awesome Blues player.....I'm not really heavy into blues, but I can sure recognize great players, maybe not their music, but rather their style and talent!

ah don't even get me started on Joe Bonamassa :-[
an absolute brilliant player who can play the blues with absolutely anyone, and make just about anyone look like they're playing the guitar wearing mittens. He's my playing-style role model. every time i get something of his right, he comes up with something else which just kicks my butt again... ?
oh well... as for kenny wayne, he's nothing other than a better looking, skinnier-string using version of Stevie Ray.

Just to offer an alternative take from another blues guitar fan: I watched some JB on Youtube because (a) I love electric blues guitar (Clapton, Green, Taylor, Freddie and Albert King, Otis Rush, Hendrix) and (b) I'd heard so much raving about him.
My thoughts: Soulless, white-bread, blues - played with astonishing skill. That "mojo" thing? He don't got it. Comparing several performances of "So Many Roads" with Peter Green's much less technical playing? Peter Green's stuff is haunting - almost scary. JB's is a demonstration. And, given that Clapton is no great shakes in this department I can't say it's the main point, but that guy's got to hire a vocalist. He makes Clapton sound like Joe Cocker.
I'm not wild about the shred element in my blues guitar to start with - but I still way prefer Gary Moore to JB. GM manages to inject some soul into his stuff. JB is another guitarist for guitarists (and gawkers), as far as I'm concerned.
Hope you guys aren't too outraged ?

I AM....
not outraged. Because I agree - there's no need for me to re-state your point other than to say I don't feel the magic with JB. That said I'm not a huge GM fan either... I like my blues VERY messy, VERY dirty. I won't go as far as to say they should play like Seasick Steve (cause he's got the opposite problem) but some grit would help.

I agree with singemonkey on this. JB is a very very good guitar player, but his blues sounds like a mix of SRV and GM whereas with those two you can immediately tell its them. Gary Moore is getting better. Listen to Close as you get. Also look on youtube for "Gary Moore Marshall Amp Demo". There's a 10min clip of him playing a slow blues at Marshall's headquarters. FANTASTIC! (Well I think so) ?
Note: please no flame wars over who's the better player, that was not my intention here.

Agreed. It's not about JB vs. GM. I just mentioned GM because he also puts a little shred into his blues. So I was saying that it's not that per se that turned me off JB. I don't think you have to sound a particular way to play blues lead guitar - Hendrix is so different to Clapton and the 3 Kings - but it's really not about how well you play. First, you've got to feel it - feel what gives blues its power and made it the dominant musical form of the 20th century. GM does, imo. JB doesn't.

Wow! Love this guy. Never heard his stuff before so checked out this video on YouTube and I'm converted. I dig his feel, his playing and his singing. His singing seems to be a mix of SRV and John Mayer. It sounds very genuine to me. (Moore's stuff sounds forced to me).
Anyhow, for those wondering what everyone's going on about:
PS: I checked out the Gary Moore Marshall demo and got bored half way through.
(I love his melody but not his soloing)
