yeah, this thing is a teensy bit scary. imagine trying to explain to your wife how you really weren't at the bar when she has the 'proof' on her voicemail...

but, seriously folks. the algorithms that go into this? and a mere 50-odd years ago we were floundering around on the moon?

Call me a primitive but I hate what stuff like this is doing to music. You don't need to be able to play an instrument, have any musical knowledge or even be able to sing (autotune is the devil) to be a "musician" nowadays.

You're a primitive, said the primitive. LOL.

These days it seems it's more about delivering a "product" that makes money than about music. You have to look outside of the newer commercial stuff to find talent.

This is a parody... but please see "exhibit A".

Exactly. They can rather pump out cheap quality stuff like 96.8% of SA's afrikaans music scene (Grab a guy of the street, shove him in tight jeans and stupid shoes, autotune his ass and make a quick buck), than invest in guys that have taken years to learn their instruments and actually make music.

It's made me sound like a dirty hipster, because whenever people ask me what music I listen to I automatically have to start with "You've probably never heard of them but..."

I don't think it's a problem that you don't have to have musical knowledge to make music, I think that's great ? People can now express themselves through the medium without having to put in hours of work to hold a simple chord, and once they've got that satisfaction in then maybe they'll pursue being more capable on an instrument ?

Any further twisting for the sake of income etc is an issue with the establishment and it'll keep pumping out mediocre by the numbers music regardless of what technology is available, just like it always has ?

I don't think so. Its on par with athletes who dope. If it was legal it would be the norm . Why train for ages when a drug can make you perform better instantly. It's lazy and borderline amoral.

You realise every argument you've made can be applied to putting frets on a guitar? Violinists don't need them to stay in tune- why train for ages when frets can make you perform better instantly? ?

Technology changes the way we make music and what the tool can do, but there always were and always will be people doing cool things them, and also people making rubbish?
...giving this a bit more thought: Even though these tools are currently intended to 'improve' or simulate existing musical tools, people will find better uses for them. Roland honestly thought that drum machines and TB303s where going to be used to back guitarists as a virtual band, and intended them to sound like drummers and bass players. No-one was interested in the 303 until people started using them to make decidedly un-bass-guitar-like sounds with them, exploiting the specific nature of the sequencer and synth. Rickenbacker and Fender were intending to make Acustic guitars easier to amplify- they weren't (at first, anyway) looking to make the kind of sounds we make with electric guitars today

Whether the music that gets made is appealing to you and me, well, ja, that 's another story
True. I'm just very ranty on the topic of synth music.

                    +1

If creating music was limited to those who could play a physical instrument, I'd be bored. Some DJ's/EDM producers have real musicality, and I have no shame in being inspired by beats and grooves from all sources.

Swings and round-a-bouts...On the upside, The Prodigy! On the downside, Auto-tuned vocals (ewwwwww).

So little good stuff out there, 95% of it sounds like poop to me. Especially those 'techno' synths that make everything sound like it was produced in germany by the very same person. Fortunately there is electro....when there be a monstrous saw bass sounds and dirty grooves - works for me.
