  • Spotted...60's Fender King acoustic

Was hanging around the Gear Junkie yesterday when someone dropped off their collection of guitar stuff...

You'd think the 60's Jaguar would have been the interesting one? But no, this one got the Junkie's in a tizz.

60's Fender King Steel string acoustic (circa 63-65). Basically a Strat neck on a dreadnought body. I generally have little love for steel string acoustics - but this thing is genius!

The neck has a radius'ed fretboard, skinny strat profile, a bizarre intonatable bridge and a fat aluminium pipe running through it. I have a sneaking suspicion this one may well not get further that finding a home in a junkies hands 8)

Now that is a nice thing to receive.

I've only seen a few acoustic guitars with electric guitar necks. Always thought it looked a bit odd.

It's nice to have an adjustable bridge.

What is the aluminium pipe for?

And most importantly does it sound & play nice?
That bridge reminded me of this...

For what we see, the pipe is to support the neck - it's basically a strat neck on a dreadnought body. The neck doesn't have much of a heel to attached to the body, so I'm guessing they have a block inside the body and to counteract the pull of the neck with the strings on, the pipe acts like a brace between neck and bottom of body.

It plays lovely - pretty much like a strat with a slightly higher action than usual. Neck feels very vintage (small fret wire & all smooth edges from lots of playing) and it's quite slinky - not a clubby baseball neck. Feels like a well assembled unit too - Pre-CBS era, so perhaps that had something to do with it?

Sounds...well the jury is undecided...not a lot of volume or projection for a dread, but a clear, crisp tone. I like it for the lack of muddiness, easy playing and I reckon that headstock looks great!
I really need to visit this store. I'm starting to kick myself for having ever bought anything before going to Gear Junkies first.

Possibly less painful than constant G.A.S attacks incurred by visiting ?

It's not a lefty! But a Yamaha SG2C with a face only a mother could love. For some reason this thing attracts the eye :? A lovely vintage feel neck (skinny, thin fret wire) with the prettiest headstock!

This one does feel like it is need of some tlc, apparently they make good surf guitars - Hmm, I'd like to see it float first.
Agree Meron. That thing is ugly. That is all.
It is the shape of a tear because its so hard to look at?
                    Looks like someone spilled custard
Certainly not something you can easily play sitting down

I'm sure that - somewhere, somehow, someone loves this. Reminds me of a pug, the looks don't improve, no matter which angle you choose :D Maple neck, poplar frame & masonite covered body. Sort of rare, there's some interesting history behind the idea of it. Mint condition ones are valued around 900USD! Originally a 12 string, but over the years seems like it got a 6 string 'conversion' - there some issues with the bridge - kinda playable for slide, but that's about it. Think this manages to trump that yamaha flying banana?

Actually, I do kinda like it... ?

Haha, I thought I might find the owner here somewhere :goodtimes:
