photo editor - reaper level...

hello you lot

i'm looking for a photo editor that'll do a fair bit but not cost a fortune. does something like that even exist? why i say reaper level is coz that's what reaper offers in the audio realm; compare it to one of its bigger cuzzins, and it shines when it comes to value. you might not find it in every commercial audio suite, but it sure as hell does more than enough for (you and) me.

so. what would the equivalent be someone who is not quite the commercial photo editor, but still want to do some colour correction or sharpening, crop the odd image for export, etc, etc, but don't necessarily want to extend ourselves all the way out to the 2 - 2.5k they're asking for photoshop elements these days.

anyone have a clue? many thanks in advance

I only do photography and editing out of self defence. ?

The following advice with compliments from my eldest daughter who is currently studying Graphic art and design.

The first link is an on line photo editor.
The second link is a free downloadable program that can do the basics of colour correcting, changing brightness, etc. You will find the program at the following link.
The other option, that might work is Lightroom, but that is part of the adobe package, you can try it on-line, or buy it for $9.99. Lightroom is easy to use and its a great program for editing batch photos, compared to Adobe Photoshop, where you can only edit one photo at a time http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php

i'm pretty much the same 8)

although i really enjoy it. thank you to both of you, i shall check out the latter two options. i shoot mostly in raw format; 20meg files are scarily large to keep uploading and working with...

Ideally keep an eye out for earlier versions of photoshop elements or corel paint shop pro? Mackro has elements at about R1500, and corel at R1200?

I've also heard good things about Photoscape free? Never used it though?

I use the free version - rather useful tool for working with photo's. Though I reckon the jpeg compression is (imho) poor in photoscape - I save in bmp and use ACDSee to convert.

I use GIMP- open source, easy to use and pretty powerful

thanks all, i'll take a look at photoscaape, seems to be what i'm after. i'll go have a look at makro for elements too - thanks studmissile - 1500 sounds manageable.

The GIMP is brilliant! And free!

My wife uses it extensively for her photo editing. You can check her work out at www.helenduplessus.com to get an idea of what can be achieved with The GIMP.

Sometimes people complain that The GIMP is not "intuitive," but that is usually from people who are used to Photoshop. Effectively, their complaint is that The GIMP is not identical to Photoshop. But don't be put off by those comments because it really is just a question of what you are used to. My GIMP-loving wife finds Photoshop non-intuitive...

30 years photolithography experience, and currently out of the industry,
yet I do still fiddle about in photoshop...
cropping, cloning, colour correcting, sharpening, contrasting...
Some filters and basic deep etching too... Nothing too radical
but I can help... Send me an image with instructions and I'll return it for your perusal.
