So we all find ourselves chatting to people on these forums and making new friends and we hardly know what one another looks like in person (except when we buy, sell and barter). But what we know and see is each others gear. My question is; Do you judge others by their gear? Do you make assumptions about peoples personalities based on what they have? I do. Not in a bad way, I hope.
If I see a guy/girl showing of his Jackson Kelly, I think, ah one of those. Probably also owns a motorcycle, shreds like a daemon and listens to 90's Metallica all the time. Wears black leather and wrap around sun glasses.
If I see someone with an ES, I already think he/she is laid back, probably more mature, drives a sedan and talks about the good old days of rock 'n roll.
Is it just me or are you guilty of this too?
Not to mention what your avatar says about you...

.....fixed that for you

Well, I'm extremely handsome and suggest that you all take the time to meet me..... :applause:
But yes I do tend to judge based on gear... Not necessarily looks wise but more musical tastes. That in turn leads me to make assumptions on looks/appearances. Your black pointy BC Retch makes me assume you wear all black and enjoy spikes and wallet chains. Doesn't make a difference. Most of you are cool online so I can only assume you're the same in the real world and I wouldn't let silly assumptions keep me from meeting you guys ?

I like everyone too, I'm always amazed when I see people fighting on other forums, calling each other Nazis and stuff because they have different opinions or the "your gear is absolute s***" comment. some guy asks how he can improve the sound of his MG and someone tells him to sell it and buy a Twin Reverb because it's crap. Maybe because we are a small community or maybe it's because we are South African and a lot more understanding of other peoples opinions.
The more flamboyant a guitar is, the more flamboyant I expect the owner to be. Ice Man with polka dots? You must be a freak, but then again I won't mind having one. ?
Any other assumptions?

If people do judge.. I should only ever play my tokai in public.. Which I suck at, so I'll stay underground ?

Maybe, despite the fact that we are such upstanding individuals, it's also because the Admin doesn't tolerate that kind of behaviour for long - much to his credit.
There are a lot of really nice people here too ?

most play the guitars or brands of their main influences.... same goes for amps
however in my experience i met a lot of players with cool gear
who were NOT ...i doubt personalities can be judged but definitely influences

Maybe it's more an alter ego thing. You buy a guitar not only because it is pretty but because it its what you see yourself playing. So basically a reversed situation. You know you are an old school blues man/woman, so you go for the ES as apposed to the pointy guitars because it suits you.
I also agree with Keira on the influence thing, but is that also not just an extension of your personality. If you have an aggressive personality, you probably listen to aggressive tunes, so you will probably invest in a aggressive looking guitar.
I like Dave Grohl a lot, I want to rock out like he does, so I play an ES-339 that is kinda the same style as his guitar...
So now I'm not only judging you on your guitar and avatar but also on the music you listen too ?
In a good way, I love all musicians even if I don't understand them all equally.

...and this is why I love seeing guitars being played out of their 'home' genres as a reminder that tone and attitude are in your fingers.

I try not to judge and will never think more or less about a person based on something as arbitrary as what gear they use, but sure - gear are tools and the tools we use depend on what we need them for and what we need them for depend on what we wish to do and what we do depends largely on who we are. So yeah..... it might be possible to tell something about somebody by the types of gear they fancy. But like all assumptions, be prepared to be totally wrong about everything ?

So what does my guitar say about me?

The strange thing is that I have always gassed for a Peavey T-60, since that day I saw it in a shop in JHB in the late 70's. I couldn't play guitar then, but I thought it was the thing. Couldn't believe my luck when I managed to get my hands on one many years later.

It says that you are not a flashy guy but you have a sense of adventure and an affinity for the out of the ordinary. This could just as well have been a strat, but it's not, that was your choice. Maybe you are the type of person that would rather adopt a mutt because it is unique rather than an pedigree dog like everyone else. But in the end the insides are still that of a dog not a wolf, because after all it was a dog you wanted.
... just spit balling here.

? O.k, I'll bite. But please, don't take this seriously! Just for fun, here it goes.....
you value quality over looks .
you're not afraid to be different and have a bit of a non-conformist streak
you allow logic to override emotion.
you are dependable and often the one looked to in times of crisis.
you value your past and sometimes hanker back to the way things used to be
the music you like will reflect all of the above. ?

Peavey T60? - Hmm... Pros :- One heck of a practical and versatile guitar. Doesn't waste any time showing off. It gets the job done. Nice natural finish, rough, tough and rugged. Your best friend in a bar room brawl - it'll drop the biggest dudes.
Cons:- The coarse wood grain is hell to get bits of bone, flesh and blood out of afterwards. Then the weight! - Comparing this to a 70's Les Paul makes the Peavey an American and the Les Paul a Karamojan drought victim.
What does it say about its owner? Hmmm....Sorry, but I'm a wee bit scared of having it crash down on my head ?
Nah, Like the Peavey T60, you're great to have around!

There are guys rocking the biggest collections and rigs in their bedrooms and pros with the most modest rigs. There are metalheads with archtops and Jazzers with Ibanii. I also know many mellow metalheads and a few fractious folkies.
So you can never really assume (but we all still do to some degree).

What guitar is your go-to guitar?
AlanRatcliffe
I'll play...
Only the best will do for you. Meticulous and believe in doing it right the first time (budget permitting). You throw yourself fully into whatever you are doing at the time. You lack (or have ceded) control in at least one area of your life. You're still finding your own feet musically, but probably have a few people you admire who you aspire to and follow faithfully. Sometime you want to upgrade the Epi to an AFD Les Paul, the Fretlight to a Custom Shop Strat (or a Suhr Classic) and the Martin to a D35 or D28.
How'd I do?
