  • Fishman start making pickups for electric - Interesting read.

Just read the premier guitar article on this. Really cool stuff! My only gripe is that it's active and requires quite a bit of modding to your guitar.... The pickups are flat and require a simulator which may not sound that good...

I dont recall reading that they need a simulator?
There is some EQing in the active circuit, but it's built in - the flatwork doubles as a circuitboard.

I'm not sure this will fly - take all the hype away and basically it's a noiseless active pickup. The only new concept is the coil construction. Not even the EQing is new (Shadow EQ5's anyone?). In fact the noiseless designs look like generation 1 (we're up to gen 4 by my count).

      First playing clip, BTW:

I think you're confusing Fishman's own quick-change rig with the actual installation. This thing:

They are typical Strat sized singles and the rechargeable battery is very small - small enough to fit in any existing cavity.
best bit i got out of that was this - ad off the side of the article, these things seem pretty cool, if not particularly practical...

these pickups would not do anything for me, to be honest. just seem like too much damn work - i can't quite get the hang of a standard pickup, let alone one with two voices...

EDIT: that said, the concept itself is fascinating. really clever thinking, and i imagine there would be more than a few working-ass axe slingers out there who would put them to the test.
