howdy. so i've been toyi-toying with the idea of getting a bass for a while. my last bass was a 4-string cort, gb44 i think. anyhoo, i don't have a massive budget, and i want a multipurpose bass. but wait, that's not all. here's a little more on just how multipurpose i'd like this bass to be:
if i bought an acoustic bass with a pup/preamp installed, would i be able to use it to lay down the bass tracks on my songs? i'm not looking for ultimate bass tone here. i don't gots me a bass amp or nuttin, will be using pod farm 2.5 thru a line 6 kb37. that is all.
i really want to get the acoustic bass tho, either way. would just rather get one than two basses, so if i can kill 2 birds and all that...
advice/thoughts/etc? much appreciated

The only problem with an acoustic bass is that they are notoriously soft.
So they are good enough for messing about with on your own but most of them would not be loud enough to be heard next to an acoustic guitar. (Unless you get a full mariachi bass ???)
Would fit in with the image of some bands if you want to look acoustic but play electric.
Despite the drawbacks it would be a fun mobile practice bass...
just my 2 cents

+1 on those 2c, unplugged you will not get more than bedroom volume. You can use it for laying down bass tracks for some styles of music but it's not suitable for funk or rock, if the bass needs to cut through with overtones.

+1 to all that's been said already. Only thing I can add is they have their own thing going on - not really an electric bass when amplified and not an acoustic upright. Bright, percussive highs and a tight low end.

But if you plug in the bass like you'll need to with any other electric bass you'll still be able to record it quite nicely through the piezo. You won't be able to gig with it acoustically.
The problem - as has been previously stated - is its acoustic volume and how that will translate to micing it up. You'll need to get the mic right in there and that will leave it suceptible to strig noise and it will pick up any fret buzz or strings slapping against the fretboard.
