He probably couldn't hear himself, he is practically deaf from standing in front of Marshall stacks. That guitar had quite a history. An early LP that was apparently factory converted to humbuckers and refinished red, it was stolen for many years before being discovered in Mexico. George had to pay quite a sum to get it back from the owner who'd bought it legitimately.
