...to another country. What would you do with your guitar gear? How would you go about getting it there (assuming all had sturdy hardcases)? Sorry if this should be in another category!
When the better half and me were moving to SA, we had the luxury of having the move paid for by employer. We shared a 20ft container with another couple and had a removal company box the lot and put it into and take it out of the container. Nothing broke and we did not sell anything. We did leave the kitchen sink in the house in Amsterdam since we are renting that out now.

I have often wondered why people advertise their gear for sale saying they will be moving abroad. Like you will be giving up guitar playing just because you happen to move across a border. Maybe I'm stupid but it makes no sense to sell stuff you want to keep.

I admit I have been buying stuff here and selling it there as well as the other way around, but that is because I know that there is a price difference so I will wind up using but not losing.
If I were emigrating to Canada it would be pretty pointless taking my Chaiwanese guitar along if the "real" thing is so readily available on that side of the pond. :-\

        +1. That's what I'd do.

When I moved across to China we had a container which had my guitar and amp ( cheapies, but....) they arrived in tact and without a scratch much to my wife's dismay ? . When we came back I only had an epiphone les paul and vamp which I shoved in a hard case and checked in as over sized and fragile luggage (succesful 2 year trip ! Business class FTW ? ) - arrived back in SA unscathed !

If it's serious equip and company relocation, make it their problem and insure !

+1 If you're not talking about pro gear, or stuff with immense sentimental value, then flog it. Problem solved.
If I was moving to another country I would just leave it with my parents. My brother can have my stuff. Prob can get better equipment over seas ? well I think I could be wrong lol.

Let's suppose it's not company relocation but for personal reasons.

The guitars I have left have immense sentimental value - one was a gift, two came from a close friend (long story) and one was my end-of-year present to myself because I survived 2012. I'm left with two MIM Strats, a Tanglewood LP and an Ibanez hollow-body. I guess I could sell the two MIM Strats and get a USA Standard if it really came to that, but I want to avoid that unless I have no other choice.

How does it work to get a container over to, for example, the US? I imagine it would be pricey.
