Morning guys

So I've mentioned that I was planning a cab build, and now it will start.

I have recieved the wood, already cut to size ? I took 12mm Pine Ply wood.
Saturday morning I went to buy the vinyl to cover it, and I got the EXACT colour I was hoping for!
Ill upload pics tonight of what I've got so far.

Instead of using grill cloth, a friend of mine said he could get me some stainless steel mesh..
So that should make it slightly unique lol

Will be taking pics of the project as I go along, and hopefully it might be interesting...

?
I built one not too long ago, posted a few pics if it helps at all.
      Hi There

I will be following your build quite closely , i am considering taking on a 2x12 build in the not so distant future.

Quite excited too see the pics during your build.

      Good Luck !
Thanks Nick, will defnitiely use the thread!
Could you tell me where you got the corner covers?

@ RJN, hope I can be of any help!!
I've built quite a few cabs & havelearnt my lessons the hard way. Please PM me if you want some help.
First up - 12 mm pine might not be the best choice of thickness & material.
I'd behay to give pointers on materials, methods etc. - let me know.

Don't know the name of the shop but its in Voortrekker road, Maitland side, almost opposite Craigs (the motorcycle place)

Would be cool to have the pointers and advice up here as a resource for any others contemplating cab builds in the future.
Thanx guys, will defnitily have to swing past those places soon.

@Lapdawg, why would you say the wood isn't a good choice?
I took thinner to make it lighter, and didnt think it would mess with the sound TOO much...

And here are the first pics..

                The wood cut to size:

                The vinyl covering:

It looks more bright red than what it is, i'ts more maroon...
I thought 12mm might be a bit thin. I suppose, depending on how you do the joins, it would be OK.
Depending on how round you make edges, it may be a good idea to glue & screw some block inside the corners - even if you cut finger joints.
I stand corrected, but Marshall use 5/8" (about 16mm) Baltic birch - at least the Marshall cabs I know.

I have some corner covers that I won't use, so you can have them if you want - they are chrome / nickle.

I'm interested to know what kind of ss mesh you are getting - is it fine? I'm looking for some fine mesh to cover the valve vents on some of my cabs.
The stuff available online is ridiculously expensive.

                  Some tips:
-Use High Tac to glue the covering on. Its easier than contact adhesive.
-Use the fold & cut technique for fitting the covering onto the corners i.e. fold ea. side over so you get the pices lying in a double layer. Pull tight & make a diagonal cut though the 2 layers that goes deep into the corner. Peel away the loose pieces to get a nicely fitting mitre. I like to do this before glueing this area.
-Put baffle strips around the edge of the baffle to raise the grill above the baffle.
-Paint or stain your baffle - usually black or dark. I'm not sure if thats the look you want with the mesh, but its generally the best.

Thank you very much! Definitely a few things I didnt take into account, like spraying the baffle. Think I'll give that a shot first..

And regarding the mesh, I too have not seen it yet, and also need to find out how much the guy can get for me, but I'll definitly let you know!

Thank you again for the advice ?
Just a quick point. Amps and cabs are usually covered in tolex, which is basically a thick plastic type finish. Vinyl is way softer and so will get scratched and cut etc after a while.

Just basically a cosmectic issue in the end. I personally used some toneau (spelling?) cover stuff I found at Kehls which looked the closest I could find to tolex locally.

Agreed with all. If you are using local materials, corner covers are important. Tolex varies quite a lot, but is generally quite tough. Vinyl can be quite spongy and tear prone. I'd be interested to find out more about toneau. Where do you get it , what is like & whats the pricing? I've always imported tolex/tweed because I couldn't find anything locally.

http://www.kehls.co.za stocked it, it was cheap as chips per metre.

                                Looks like that
I'd like to build a cab too at some point, if only because I like to build my own gear. I read online somewhere that MDF is the best material, and Timber City stocks it (under some brand name or other, I forget).

I have what I think is a very unique idea for the grill cloth, so you guys will forgive me for not sharing it. ?

MDF is Superwood here if I'm correct, will probably be too heavy. Most people use marine ply, or pine (older guitar cabs were made of pine)
