For those who don't know there have been free adsl speed upgrades, if you're on the regular 384kbps package, you go up to 1mb, if you're on 1mb you go up to 2mb and so it continues.

Most places should be upgraded by now but the process of being switched over takes a while if you leave it.

To check if you area has been upgraded go here:
http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/

If it has been upgraded phone 10210 (free from home phone) and speak to Telkom (regardless of whether you are on mweb or any other service provider)
Tell them your exchange has been upgraded and that you want them to switch you over on their system, once that is done its done! I'd recommend restarting your router after they do it.
Great, thanks Kalcium! According to that link, I have already been upgraded 8)

The upgrades are done automatically once they are busy with your area, you shouldn't need to call anyone.
the Telkom part is free, if you host with Mweb or someone else I reckon you'll have to pay more for the extra speed.
The upgrades are done automatically, and the switching will be done automatically as well over time.
The thing is that for a lot of areas the upgrade has already been done but telkom haven't switched you over on their system yet so you can phone them and get it done now rather than waiting another month or 2.

@mannemarak, im with mweb, they only offer 1mb now as their slowest speed, they upgraded the speeds of their customers rather than reducing the price
OK silly question time. How do I know what speed my line is? I had a look but it's not printed on the cable ?

When I go to http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/ it says that my current product speed is 1Mbps. Does that mean I am already on 1Mbps or does it mean that I could be if my service provider (Cybersmart) upgrades me? It also says that the maximum speed available in my area is 4Mbps. How do I get that? Do I ask my service provider or do I ask Telkom? Any rough guess on the price difference between 1Mbps and 4Mbps?

              http://www.speedtest.net/

That will measure your true line speed.

I may be wrong but I believe that the 1Mb/s speed is only from 10pm to 6am
That /checkadsl link reporting 1Mbps doesn't mean you're modem is running at 1Mbps. For me it says 1Mbps but my modem is still syncing at 384 (even after repowering it).

I suggest you reset your modem and then actually login to the modem (admin, admin usually does the trick). There'll be some sort of overview page normally which will report the down/up line speeds to see if you've been switched over.

Regarding your ISP, if you're on uncapped its quite possible that you'll need to upgrade your ISP account to go from 384k to 1M. On a capped account these days it will probably just work at the higher speed.

Yeah, I'm never quite sure what to make of SpeedTest. So apparently I now have a 1Mbps line but when I ran SpeedTest this morning it showed a download speed of 1.28Mbps. What does that mean? Did I actually get a faster speed than the line can allow or is it measured differently?
Ahh yes . Is this part of their NGN roleout project ?

Anyways . my max available bandwidth on my exchange is 4mb still ☹ .

Anyone out there thats on the Waterkloof exchanges ? some should be on 20mb by now in that area . ☹

Thats why I said you have to phone telkom on 10210 to tell them to set your line to sync at 1Mbps, otherwise it will continue at 384kbps

Im on mweb uncapped and I have 1Mbps all day now for the same price I was paying for my 384kbps uncapped...
I can't speak for other service providers, but mweb and telkom's minimum offer is1Mbps now, they don't sell any packages, capped or uncapped less than that. Its just a matter of getting telkom to set your line to sync at 1Mbps. But only if your area can handle it which is checked with http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/
(Most areas should be able to handle 1Mbps now)

No its from 6pm you get full speed. But its still a lot faster during the day. I can load youtube vids faster.

I think it also depends on the ISP or if you are capped or uncapped:

                          http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/uncapped/do-uncapped-up-to-1mbps/
                          Speed Restrictions
                          6am - 6pm: up to 295 kbps
                          6pm - 10pm: up to 354 kbps
                          10pm - 6am: up to 1 mbps
                          No restriction on local data
I would guess any bandwidth throttling is entirely down to your ISP surely?

.. his is what you get if you move to SA, from 100/100Mbit uc ..down to 3/0.5 ?
