Anyone know the latest cost of all the tolls from Joburg to Durban?
I mean as a total cost. Not per toll ?
must be in the region of about R160 each way
If I remember correctly, the local AA's web page has an up-to-date calculator. Distance and tolls etc.
I used it recently when travelling to the Eastern Cape.
        Cool stuff, thanks

I check the AA website. Looks like Im in for R174 each way
Never mind the toll gates, its the speed traps you need to be REALLY scared off!!!!!!

You can bypass some of the tolls without adding too many Ks to the trip. Originally alternate routes had to be signposted and most still are. So, for example, you can turn onto the old highway (now the R103) and travel that between Warden and Villiers and cut out one toll. The road is single carriageway, and in OK but not great condition. Might still be speed traps on that. Van Reenen's can be bypassed by using Oliviershoek pass, but that does add non-trivial Ks to the trip, although it is a more scenic drive.

You can get by some of those with some visible 50's and 100's.

I just checked on Google Maps - going down Oliviershoek adds just 16ks
Oliviershoek is almost undriveable at the moment due to potholes and general degradation.
Hotels have closed because customers cannot get through.
I have had some scary experiences on the alternative routes. Stick to the Toll roads, a whole bunch safer!

Or driving a land rover...you only worry about the 60km zones then ?
My dad travels regularly between Jo'burg and Dundee and he used to take all the bypass routes but just sticks to the N3 now. You just need one busted rim or tyre on a pot hole and the tolls will look like chappies money.
