That's right Mike Todd, Paul Keogh, Paul Burton, Derek Marsland and me. We played Club Chicago in late 79. If you have any photos I'd love to see them.
Now you're talking, I lived at Club Chicago during that time...great memories. ?
I hung out with the band almost all the time during that time, now I'm trying to remember you.
At the time my good friend Ian Smukler was the assistant manager of Club Chicago and Tony Sanderson was the manager, in fact if memory serves me correctly Tony was the Alcatraz band manager as well.
Elrido, my Portuguese buddy was the DJ, and my old bud Kosie Smith (ex world ranked light heavyweight boxer) was the bouncer.
I was the guy who brought the Pink Floyd "The Wall" album to Elrido.
We used to play the helicopter intro to the Wall a lot, I used to work the lighting system. ?
Then you guys started playing the Wall, I remember Mike on his Les Paul (great guitar player) doing the solo spot on perfect.
I remember you used to do, "Video killed the radio star"...Paul used to sing it through a funnel.
But, the best part of your show was ending with "Whole lotta love", who can forget that, Paul the drummer used to kick his entire drum kit to the ground at the end of the set...you guys were wild. 8)
Chicago was even open on a Saturday afternoon, and it was packed every Saturday afternoon.
I remember one or two of the band members lived in a flat in Hillbrow, we used to hang out there a lot.
Of course Club Chicago was the beginning of the "gang war" (the Portuguese guys from the South) that eventually ended up in murder in Illovo Sandton, where a bouncer was killed at a club in Illovo...I will not mention names for my own safety ? because some of those 'dudes' are still alive, a few fled the country before the trial, and a few went to jail. ?
What a great club that was, built in an old movie theatre, that together with 20th Century were the best two clubs this town has ever seen.
I remember from those days, Malie Kelly was the singer in the band that played 20th Century, along with Lolly...damn!, can't remember the bands name?
The Madison Brothers also gigged at Club Chicago, they were also big at the time.
Great memories. ?
