Steve Vai is awesome but he's got a very weird sound to a lot of his songs that's hard to appreciate.
I love these songs:
- For the Love of God
- Hand on Heart
- Bad Horsie
- Blue Powder
- The Audience is Listening
I'll add more later. Try find these songs and listen to them. Very good stuff even if you're not into the more wacky stuff.

I prefer his earlier stuff for it's rawness. Also check out The Attitude Song from the CD Flexable . He made that album while he was still a youngster (22 IIRC) working in Frank Zappa's band.

I love The Attitude Song!
What earlier songs do you recommend?

Viv Woman and Call it Sleep from Flex-Able. Burnin' Down the Mountain from Flex-Able Leftovers. His movie role in Crossroads (as the Devil's guitarist) is classic.
Also check out his stuff with Dave Lee Roth (the albums Eat 'em and Smile and Skyscraper) and the Alcatrazz album Disturbing the Peace.

I love his Crossroads bit!
Saw the movie a long time ago and was just floored.
I've read that Ry Cooder played the slide-guitar. Downloaded some of his stuff and he's just amazing, as well.

Here’s another thumbs up for Ry Cooder. A true blues guitarist. Awesome. I have lots of his music on CD, but would love some stuff on DVD. Haven’t seen anything yet.
He did a great version of the Elvis Pressley song All Shook Up.
Cheers

KC, have you tried Amazon for Ry Cooder DVDs?
I avoid ordering from them because of all the extra costs (shipping and customs) but it's worth it if you can't find something locally.

Steve Vai is god..well, i'm a big Vai freak because of his phrasing and whammy bar stuff. I love his stuff with Alcatrazz, especially songs like Mercy and God blessed video. Speaking of which, Malmsteen was pretty good with Alcatrazz, especially when you listen to songs like Big Foot and Hiroshima Mon Amour.
Anyways, back to Vai, i absolutely adore his playing on sex and religion, fire garden, real illusions :reflections, elusive light and sound, the ultra zone, alive in an ultra world and alien love secrets.
His stuff with David Lee Roth was pretty cool as well and his track "Race with Devil on Turkish highway" with Al DiMeola ia really awesome.
Besides Vai, Satch's surfing with the alien, not of this earth, strange beautiful music, crystal planet and joe satriani albums are just phenomenal.
Then there's Eric Johnson's Tones, Ah Via Musicom and Venus Isle.
And Petrucci's stuff with Dream Theater and his solo album "Suspended Animation" are awesome. I especially love "Glasgow Kiss","Damage Control" and " Jaws of life" from his solo album.
By the way, if any of you are interested, i have the Ibanez 90th anniversary party featuring Andy Timmons, Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai with Simon Phillips on drums.
Satriani
Yeah I also have that concert. You are speaking to someone who was a MASSIVE Vai fan. He JUUUUUSt edged Satch for me, but than I realised that he isn't as creative as he appears to be. HE also has a major attitude problem (Attitude song suits him) ?
Watch how he behaves when his string breaks on that concert, and watch how he buggers off the stage at the end when GIlbert and Co try get friendly etc...
Vai has written some classics, but most of his tunes are easily forgettable for me these days...
I love Passion and Warfare, and the odd song from other albums.
Satriani
Oh I almost forget, those of you who are Vai or Satch fans should listen to old Alice Cooper tracks. Most of the guitar on those songs are one of the 2.
Slash and Satch play together on Hey Stoopid (Pretty rare) and what's more, Satch is the one playing Rhythym while Slash does the intro and main solo. Satch performs the outro tho ?

No one mentioned 'Tender Surrender'...what he does in that song is insane...
Have you also checked out the live version of 'Building The Church' from the G3 gig with Satch and Petrucci....man what a song...

Stevies Spanking from the CD
Them or Us (where Vai Trades off with Dweezil Zappa). There's a few live clips of it, most commonly from the Halloween concert in New York 1981. Vai is wearing a leopard print top and long black trousers. There's another version of it from Rome on July 10 1982, where he wears the same top, but is wearing a very short pair of white shorts.

yea.. now i remember
I also seem to recall him playing a Fender ? / or fender style guitar
wieerd...

His "Sticker" Strat - with a DiMarzio X2N pickup. He used that and Carvin amps in the early days.

For the love of God and the audence is listening..
However i stick to my opinion that these guys have too much technique but their music makes u feel nothing..
I'd rather make honest music that affects people, makes them feel something..these guys have great technique, but i can hardly ever listen to one whole song...
I like honesty and feel, thats why i appreciate Daron malakian,a far less experienced guitarist, but his music means alot to me..System of a Down was the soundtrack for me growing up..
But I'm getting sidetracked now so I'll just keep quiet..

Couldn't disagree with you more! Some of Vai's, Satch's and Timmon's tunes nearly make me want to cry sometimes. Their ballads are amazing and their rock is way funkier than what's on the radio.
