  • Cape Town: Gig available for two rock bands on 9 March

I am not affiliated and have no knowledge of details. Simply posting what I received via Facebook from a page that promotes local gigs. Any interested bands contact "Ryno" directly.

Looking for 2 rock outfits to play this FRIDAY in Cape Town's Southern Suburbs.
Max playing time 60 mins - door deal split between 3 bands
Popular venue !!!!
Call or sms Ryno on 076-433.4422
The Jolly Roger, I take it. We were told, "Each of the three bands gets 30% of the door takings." Because musicians can't do sums, you see ?

Sound and door guy but it's all negotiable. They lost Le Riche though and the organising and promoting has become a little dry.
We're there on 7 April (I think) with Cannon...
IMO - Run away, don't stop, don't look back, keep running. Door deals suck buttocks.

That they do. I play with a cover band and we simply cannot a venue that will offer a set fee, are we simply looking in the wrong places? P.S. In Cape Town.

Our bass player does solo gigs on the side. He's got a buddy in CT who also does the 1 man thing. A while ago they were talking about the biz and it turns out that the average pay in CT for a gig is about a third of what he gets in JHB.
Nope. Sorry. That means the venue has no stake in promoting the gig and probably won't. Then they'll bitch if the bands don't bring in enough people.

Doing the circuit in Cape Town, I can vouch for that! ☹

Did you read the Californian's article?
I did, yeah. Wanted to repost the link, but wasn't sure where I'd seen it. Is this what sparked the posting of that in the first place?
i got a call from a club owner in the southern suburbs around 8 on saturday night, dont know one which club, anyway i was asked to go do sound last minute, which i obviosly refused, just because i can.

i have worked with alot of venues, and ran a venue myself for a while, and all i can say is, its is a big mess in cape town.

both parties are guilty, bands and venues for this, for not working together.
most of the bands that i see that are always complaining are the ones that dont have any recordings, website and basic marketing skills to keep their fans informed about whats happening, and building up fan base of loyal fans. not facebook

i can go on about this for days, but pretty much being a musos is not much different that running a business.
and a venue is also a business, so if the venue make wrong choices and not try and build a stronger music community its their loss. reputation is everything in the music community.

the can of worms is open..........
The only gigs worth mentioning I got paid for in the past was Aardklop at Bourbon Street and at a place called Milano's in Vereeniging (don't know if they still exist).. and we're doing a gig in May in Bloemfontein who's at least covering the fuel costs.

Can't really ask for more it seems, or are we doing something wrong?

Sucks to live in Welkom. :-\
