16 microphones compared in 2 mins
Interesting vid, goes to show that microphones really are just "eq", if you listen you'll notice the sound doesn't change at all, just the characteristics of the sound, as if you'd done some funny eq on it.
Very cool, thanks for this!
The difference to EQ though is if the mic doesn't capture it, it's not there.

That's true, mic choice and placement is obviously important, as this video clearly shows.
the octava sounds lekker
Interesting video but I'm not really sure what to make of it. I can't really decide whether one sounds any better than the other, even though they are clearly different.
Also, I'm curious to know how the SM57 and SM58 compare but I can hear very little, if any, difference between the two.

Yeah, to me that is the point, can't really say what is better unless you have an application in mind - how do I want it to sit in the mix.Dewald "deefstes" Swanepoel wrote: Interesting video but I'm not really sure what to make of it. Only difference I know of is the pop filter on the 58, so should sound very similar. Also, I'm curious to know how the SM57 and SM58 compare but I can hear very little, if any, difference between the two.
What's a pop filter?kayDUB wrote:Only difference I know of is the pop filter on the 58, so should sound very similar. Also, I'm curious to know how the SM57 and SM58 compare but I can hear very little, if any, difference between the two.
Unfortunately the video compression is more than a little limiting for sound quality - it does make some of the mics sound more alike than I know they are (case in point: the MD421 and SM57).
Otherwise they are all good mics and as kayDUB says, which you choose is just down to what sound you want.
@ Deefstes a pop filter is a screen of foam or fine mesh which breaks up the rush of air you get with your plosives (like "p"), stopping or limiting the "popping" sound you get with those letters. Obviously used for vocals rather than instruments. The only differences between the 57 and 58 are the built in pop filter in the 58 and the shape of the grille. The foam does tend to affect the high frequencies a bit, softening and attenuating them a little.

To me, the SM57 sounded thicker and raunchier, the SM58 was a bit thin.Dewald "deefstes" Swanepoel wrote: Also, I'm curious to know how the SM57 and SM58 compare but I can hear very little, if any, difference between the two.
What this video demonstrated to me was that if I like a certain sound (SM57) there is no need to buy all these expensive mics
Wow, what an awesome video! Thanks for sharing Alan!
Not going to lie, the sound of the simple SM 58 sounds so good! ?

a pre amp shootout will also be pretty cool, using the same mic and guitar signal but different pre amps

Very cool video.
Thing is, we're choosing a favourite microphone for this particular amp and cab, including the settings on the amp itself, and the speakers in the cab.
Now change the amp, and cab, and we'll be choosing a different favourite.
This is why studios try and own many different microphones, and as many pre-amps as they can afford, because the combinations are endless.
This two minute video must have taken the guy three hours to record, and another few hours to edit...it looks so simple when you watch it, but the guy did a LOT of work on this vid, he has my respect.
