ok, so i went out and tested the albion tct35c (more on that elsewhere). decided in the end not to purchase it. (more on that elsewhere.) i have ended up with some lightweight goodies to get my stuff going. hopefully i'll have something down soon. here's what i got:
pod studio kb37 - use it more as a recording interface, me old ux1 has seen better daze.
shure sm57 - will get an sm58 as well, soon as this head cold kicks the bucket.
and also a pair of 'monitoring' headphones. (contradiction in terms, i know, but hey, you can't always reach for the actual speakers without the wife creeping up behind you wielding the ol' louisville slugger.)
wish me luck, and i'll keep y'all up to date as to how everything integrates with reaper.

Good Stuff
The KB37 has a keyboard as well? It would be good to hear your Feedback on this nifty device.
Tell us more about monitoring headphones. In my house it would be a good thing as well ?

they were cheap, but they're behringers. my old ones are akg's. also pretty nifty. my only worry with the behringers is that i got them home and saw they had 'great bass response'. hmm. might skew things a bit. well, we shall see. and yup, the kb37 is the one with the keyboard. was actually looking for the ux2, but at the moment my midi controller is an old technics keyboard - nothing wrong with it, but it meant many wires etc. this is a neater solution. will keep y'all in th'loop!

Good stuff Dom. I'm also using an SM57 with monitoring headphones at the moment.
The headphones I'm using are KRK KNS 8400s, and they seem to be reasonably well regarded. The sound is crisp, and I can usually hear each instrument very clearly which is exactly what I need them for: checking detail. Until I invest in a decent set of monitors, I'll continue to use them for mixing, and then using my home theatre system and Sennheiser 'phones as references.
They cost me just under R2k, but you can get the 6400s for less, not sure what the difference is.
There are also the Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones which have good reviews, and www.musicmadness.co.za have Beyerdynamic headphones available, which have been used in studios for years.
These types of headphones all seem to retail for between R1500 and R2000 or so, although obviously there are some cheaper alternatives which offer the same functionality. No knowledge of those, though.

oh hell no, these are cheepcheep. i haven't unpacked them, thinking of taking them back. i'm quite lucky - my study/studio is upstairs and i can crank my little vox up to about 8 on the 1w setting before it starts to leak through even vaguely. and the monitors don't even come close to that level, not when i want to listen and sit in the same room without doing me a damage. i might just hang on to these as goodish tracking cans and get another set for monitoring.
thanks for the links warren.
