So... I've been thinking lately about starting a band. Finally found a bunch of guys that play instruments (my school days proved that I had no friends with musical talent ? ), and was thinking about pieces that make up a good gig.

As always happens, whenever I'm daydreaming I remember awesome songs that live bands I've seen before have performed. Then, when I sit down and think about it, I can only think of a few. SO....

What do you guys recommend? The main genre would be rock. All members of the proposed band are fans of the old-school stuff (AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin, etc...) but aren't against some of the newer stuff too. As long as it's good music that makes the audience want to sing and dance along, that's awesome.

Ok, so a couple of songs that seem to get the crowd going (from what I've seen):
  • Summer of '69 - Brian Adams
  • I love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett
  • A rock version of Lady Gaga's Poker Face (I've heard this, it's actually impressive ? )
  • Highway to Hell - AC/DC
So, other suggestions? I know I'm gonna be kicking myself when I read the suggestions, but hey, that's life :-[
Valerie by amy winehouse - i heard an all male band cover this and it translated very very well.
Living on a Prayer, if your vocalist can handle it.
Oh yeah, Living on a Prayer and It's My Life are pretty awesome ?

I hadn't heard of the previous 2 songs before, but they certainly look like they have potential...

@Jack - Well, we're only starting out at the mo, so small venues at the moment, working our way up I guess ?
monsieur flash asks a most pertinent question. it's important to have variety in your repertoire, and to be able to tailor your set list to your audience. all your songs so far will get a crowd rocking, sure, but they are probably aimed at a slightly older and more rockin' crowd. so best to think up a couple of scenarios you might play at (corporate functions apparently make a lot of money, weddings, pubs, clubs, etc) and build a set list around each. you'll find quite a few numbers will run across each set list eventually.

perhaps start off in one area, then branch out. that way you can build each set list over time.

          cheers

We used to do a cover of Sex and Candy by Marcy's Playground. It was kinda our secret weapon, it always got people into enjoying the gig and its a really easy song to play and one that you can do so much with, it works really well with driven guitars.

Its the kind of song where not many people know the name, but when they hear it, its like, oh yeah! I love that song...
"Pixies - Where is my mind" is always a crowd favorite.

Also "Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication" and "Pearl Jam - Better man" are relatively straight-forward songs to play and most crowds tend to enjoy them.

Sex and Candy is a great song. Marcy Playground got me through those uneasy teenage years ?
