TJ's provide a PA system.

Friendly room. Friendly, supportive crowd. Performers get 3 numbers, maximum of 15 minutes. Preference is given to people who have not played at TJ's before.

You know you want to do this ?
Think it's time to visit TJ's again
Anyone else going to be brave and join me ?
Ok, I just got a call from TJ's and I will be the "host" for the forthcoming open mic night. This is not a massive honour, I just pull the plug if somebody plays too long and ask the audience to put their hands together for [whoever is next].

I'd really like to see some GFSAers coming along, and I know that TJs are keen for GFSAers to come along to TJs and show off their skills and ready wit.

Also a chance to rub some flesh, shake hands, have a beer, show off guitars.

      What do y'all say?

You can turn up on the night and put your name down, but if you have serious intent to play then PM me and I can ensure you get a spot.

Ok... just a bump to get some more attention on this.

Come on and come along you Jo'burg GFSAers. Playing is not mandatory - come along and let's shake some hands and a drink a beer together. However if you do want to play you are assured of a friendly, supportive audience.

Plenty of safe parking. Light, hot meals available. Bar service. So far I know of 3 GFSAers who will definitely be attending and one probable.
Yeah, you can put my name down (for attending, not performing). I've been meaning to come to one of these to check it out and have not gotten around to it yet.
I'll be the compere/announcement type dude. Those GFSAers who are coming, please look for me and come and say hello. Once the show starts I get busy, but before that I should be able to help everybody else hook up. If you get there early and there's nobody obviously compering etc then just ask for me.

I might wear crocs to make it easier, but in this weather...

Oh... the room TJs use for open mic nights is quite small and not too cold. Once we get a few bodies in there it warms up nicely.

The room's layout is a bit odd - as you will see. We try to maximise the seating opportunities, but get there early (19:15, 19:30) to get a seat with a good view.

And really... bring a guitar and give it a go. It's a friendly club.
              Bump!

And you know we're past the solstice now so the days are getting longer, the nights are getting shorter and we're getting closer to the sun.
I may be in town... (in PTA and JHB for meetings) will try swing by. I may bring the lass along but she's going to ask what the indoor smoking policy is (as in, she won't even support the love of her life when Hellfire is playing somewhere that smoking is allowed)...
So, is Squonk going to light up a triple size Cuban before going on?

You've got 2/3. We are past the solstice, the days are getting longer but we are not yet getting closer to the sun. Aphelion is only on the 4th of July so for a few days still we're still going further away from the sun.

Sorry, couldn't resist the nit-pick. Not that it should stop you from coming along on Thursday. What's great is that I will be there as well so you can direct your anger over mindless nit-picks at a real person. ?
Does Aphelion apply to the planet as a whole and Solstice to N Hemisphere V S Hemisphere. So we are now getting closer to the sun relative to them what lives north of the equator?

The premises are part of a municipal club and they provide a fine outdoors balcony for smokers. I think it may be allowed (or a blind eye may be turned) in the main bar, but not in the function rooms.

In a way you could say that but it is strictly speaking not correct. The solstice pertains to the tilt of the earth's axis while aphelion pertains to the elliptical orbit of the earth.

But yes, at winter solstice the south pole is closer to the sun than the north pole and vice versa at summer solstice. This difference is really negligible (and even more so for us who are fairly close to the equator), compared to the difference in distance that we are from the sun as a result of the elliptical orbit of the earth.
PS.... the building is one of the oldest in Johannesburg, having been one of the two Geldenhuys farm houses. The other farm house (the older of the two) still stands and is about 1/2 Km a way in the suburb of Greenside.

The Greenside house was Louw Geldenhuys's farm house. There is a road named after him - it crosses the Emmarentia dam wall. The suburb of Emmarentia is named after Louw's wife.

What is now the Marks Park club house was built by Frans Geldenhuys for his wife Judith - hence the name of the road.

The family graveyard is still in Greenside, close to Louw's old house.

The original Geldenhuys farm covered much of what is now NW Johannesburg.

The room that TJs use for open mic nights was once the Johannesburg Press Club.

Bob, what sort of meals do they serve? Is it the kind on which we can supper or would we be better off to have supper at home and then come to TJ's on a full stomach?

Toasted sarmies... that kind of thing. Sometimes there'll be steak, egg and chips on the menu but not always. It hasn't killed me yet.
Alright, thanks. See yous tonight then.
                                  MEGABUMP
