GFSA 1st Birthday!

I was typing this to a member...

You know, it's coming up to a year since I started this forum and I just can't believe how beautifully it's grown! You guys rock and make it so worthwhile with all the stuff you do to help it grow.

...when I realised that it's almost time to celebrate our 1st birthday! Officially, I think the forum first saw day of light on the 15th of October (just 4 days before my birthday, so that helps in remembering it!). So we're just over a month away from a 1-year old forum.

Now, what do we do to celebrate????

How 'bout this: Say about 50-100 of us pitch up at a public place...say the Union Buildings, each with his or her guitar and as big an amp as you can lay your hands on. Totally unanounced and without permission of course. We rig up a massive generator with enough power outlets for all, and let rip. Nothing that we've practiced beforehand, we just make one hell of a noise while someone is waving a GFSA banner... 8)

I love it. Pity I'm in Durban, so there's no chance I'm getting up there. Besides, I need to stop making noise and start making music, not the other way around ?

I vote for an online birthday party!

Get as many of the members on at the same time(to break that pesky most users at once max #)and sing happy birthday in a general discussion post!

Maybe some of the guys can post mp3's of them thrashing out "Happy Birthday" on their axes in new and creative ways?

and then Norio can give us all cake!

Seriously though, love the online birthday party thing and happy birthday mp3s! Regarding the cake, I'll get Tanya (wifey) to bake us one and then I can send you all a picture of a piece while we enjoy the whole cake ?

Maybe whe should do something for someone else on the B-day? Give weed to old people or something ? Or tell 5 new people of guitar forum and then give them weed. Or don't give them weed and just tell them about guitar forum ?

It seems that the rains have brought a bumper crop of weed to Kuilsrivier. Maybe Wessel can bake us a giant weed cake and send us each a piece via email (Cyberspace cookies yum! ? )

haha I was only joking.... ? But I think it could be cool to pay it forward and do something for other people on the Birthday. Maybe sponsor old guitars to schools or people than want to learn the guitar or something ?

I was going to suggest we have a drive to make sure we reach 300 members by the anniversary, but he rate things are going, we are going to do that anyway!

We're spread around the country unfortunately, so a big get together is still going to be difficult. The instrument drive thing has been done (most recently by CCFM and Bothners).

What I'd like to do sometime is set up a fund account that we can deposit money to at any time (as many of us have umm... variable income). The money gathered could then be donated to a deserving music-oriented charity once a year (or for an emergency situation such as helping the family of a deceased muso).

For now though, what I'd like to propose is a Norio appreciation fund. Norio started this site and has been bearing the running costs all along, as well as putting in many hours administering the site and adding new features. I know this hasn't always been easy for him, and he hasn't been able to buy much of the gear he's enabling us to discuss - but he's always come through anyway. So I'm proposing that we have a pledge drive to raise some money for his GAS fund, which can use as a Birthday present on the 19th of October (his actual birthday, if I did the math right).

What do you guys think?
