to be honest, about the tube amp thing, thats my opinion and i speak from my own experience. if i was buying a proper amp (ie bigger than a practice amp) i would go for tube. even if i had to save for a while. it doesn't really matter about being a beginner. the fact is, you want it to sound good. as i say just my opinion.

That's not really the issue at hand. No one is going to debate that or say otherwise (well, i'm sure there are some).. But for a beginner, getting a tube amp isn't really worth it.

A friend of mine has an Elk tube amp - sounds like balls, wouldn't play the thing if you paid me. So I suppose not all tube amps have inherently amazing tone.

Granted, however on average they sound better than SS amps.

Just get a tube amp and save money in the long run. I had my fair share of SS amps before I got into valves, wish I just got a valve amp from the get go. Deals are out there. I sold a mint tweed Classic 30 PV for 4500 last year. Have cash in hand and be the first to call, gumtree is your friend.

Also a friend of mine picked up a ELK custom 60 a vibrolux rip off but better I think for R3000 and a 3 12 cab ?

Depends.....if that sort of budget is only gonna get you something "a little" better, forget it...... I'd rather save a bit longer and get an amp that I can still use couple years down the line. You may compromise now, then have to upgrade again in the not too distant future. Save as long as you can, and buy the best that budget will allow......not a quick fix. But that's just me......

Also, then go out and get what "suits" YOUR ears.......

Thanks for everyone who replied and thanks for the guys who pm'd me with gear for sale. I knew that this topic would get hot as everyone has their fav.

I've been playing for on and off for about 2 1/2 years now, mainly ball-sing around, only got more serious recently. I think I'm still at beginner status, (guido, what you think??) I have a 15 watt fender frontman and playing with guidothepimp this weekend made me realise a few things.

1) next upgrade is an amp, no doubts about it.
2) I'm pretty sure that SS is the way that I'm going. I had a brief run on his HIWATT, (all too brief) and loved it. He's got the 100watt ( i think) and man has this thing got balls. It's got all that I want.....................price, power and hard as nails.
3) My warlock sounds mean as hell through his amp.

in my humble opinion... this is all relative..

i have both ss and valve amps. are there differences.. yes definitely.. the valve amp has warmer cleans and a great tone for classic rock... but for a more contemporary rock metal sound.. my ss is still my goto amp. love that thing.

im not one for sticking pedals between my guit and amp.. i like to run straight into the amps and my ss amp hasnt let me down.

so... im not going to praise one type of amp over another.. this is all prefence anyways... but boyohboy did that warlock ROCK on the ss. nice fat rock tone..

so in summary. different technologies with their merits both.
my ears decide this for me. they both have their place in my kit

I guess that sums it up pretty well. That amp of yours ticks all the boxes that I need from an amp right now. I know that sometime down the line I may get a tube as well, but looking at what you threw at that amp on Friday, It just lapped it up and sounded great no matter what was played.

What's the model number anyway on your HIWATT?, I have someone who wants my frontman, so I may just let that go this week and get the ball rolling.

Ta for the kind words Gimp, never played with anyone else before so I didn't know how to rate my status.........above beginner is fine by me. I wanna learn more though, the thirst for more is there!!!!

Listen to a lot and buy the one you like the most that you can afford.
Even between different tube amps they sound dramatically different.

I have pretty much decided on what I want and have tested about 10 amps so far. I'm only going to buy a replacement in the beginning of December, so I have a while to decide and will try some more.
