some input please on a new amp.............SORTED

So here's the deal, I've pretty much grown out of my little 15w fender frontman, but I'd like to keep it as a practice amp, but it's not going to work with me keeping it as my main amp as it simply lack real prescence when playing with anyone else. Firstly, I'm not a brand person, I'll give anything a try if it is good to play, well made and the price is right. I have no issues about buying second hand as well. Even though I play mainly metal, I love all sorts of music and don't want to limit myself to something that is only suited for this genre. Ideally I'd love something that can hold its own to a session with a full band playing along. My budget is about R4000. Is this do-able or should I save for bigger and better things?

Which amp is best is completely up to the player and what his needs are. So well done on trying out as many as possible to find what works for you. I doubt that I will ever look at anything other than modelling amps and software again. But there are millions of other players who swear by tubes. Neither is better or worse, just different and both types feed different needs. So ja, happy shopping man. Hope you find what works for you.

Thought I'd let you lot know what I decided to buy. I played guido's amp and loved it (5 minutes) and spent my lunch time today playing another...........I'm sold.

HIWATT G100R MkII (SS)

Pick it up tomorrow. Cost me the grand total of R2800-00 out of the box. Found a place locally to me who had stuff at old prices that he couldn't shift, so he made me a deal. Footswitch included.

So my old frontman and gio have got to go - R1300 for both. (punt punt) lol.

The footswitch that was included in the deal didn't work so kosher, so I paid in a bit extra and got the FS301 from Hiwatt as there was issues with the marshall, boss and vox units.

Played this thing for most fo the day and it was nice to have some depth in the sound. I still haven't approached this thing with a pedal yet, the onboard sound at this stage is more than fine, I just can't wait to switch from clean to distortion without going up to the amp.

that article while it was fun to read........ Tube amps are warmer, and just sound better to my ears......... maybe you could fool me to thinking a modelling amp is a tube amp........... but thats like disguising a man up to be a woman, and sending me ona date with her.... ITs not Nice (for me at least)

I play numerous shows, and I wont lie EVERYTIME I see a ss amp being hauled onto stage I anticipate the tone, and its usually worse..... I also see y fair share of bad tube amp tone as well........... but also some amazing tone.

Naah, you can't gouge your eyes out with a ss amp. Best you can do is to repeatedly bash your head against it. Popular lore is that a metal guitarist doing precisely this because he was unhappy with his ibby's tone through his ss stack, is what lead to his fans emulating this act of hopeless despair and thereby giving birth to headbanging.
