Interesting notion, Rene. Did they try to do something together? In my view, where John was at circa Sweatband with Dieter, etc was just miles apart [stylistically, image, attitude, etc] from where the Cohens were at the time of, eg, Bright Blue. Tom Fox was just so suited to the music of Bright Blue (little musical tapestries, faux township sound) that I have difficulty imaging John in a band with them. But on paper, I agree with the idea. They certainly knew how to take themselves forward to that level.

PS: I've read about, but not yet heard, the Pressure Cookies. That's Ian Cohen with Heather Mac (ex Ellamental), right? Sounds like a great combination, but I'm always gigging on the odd nights I see one of their gigs advertised.

PS2: Did you ever meet Deon du Plessis (later of Toxic Shame), who was a close friend of John's in the later years? Deon is another great guitarist I had a lot of time for. Hectic Ace Frehley and Steely Dan fan (I have the same weird taste), who also has the most incredible vocal range I had ever heard. Cool musician. I have this great memory of Deon, myself and Greg Schoeman (ex The Sunshines) standing in front of a turntable (remember those?? ?) in the early hours of one morning after a gig all three simultaneously, and spontaneously, shouting / singing "Is there gas in the car? Is there gas in the the car???" with Kid Charlemagne blasting out and the neighbours banging on the dividing wall!! LOL ? That's the Dan for you, I guess ... ?

John, Peter and Ian Formed a Band Called Touch Wood while they were still at Varsity, had a huge local following played in CT. I can't remember what broke up the band , I think it was Magnus and sons. John went on to Sweat Band, Cohens started Bright Blue with Tom Fox who I vaguely knew, (I think we shared a girlfriend at one time). As a guitarist Tom wasn't in the same league as John or any of the crew I jammed with. The pressure cookies I must admit I have heard a lot about (cool name) and was surprised to find that the Cohens were connected including sister Terri according to the SA rock encyclopaedia link you posted. I get mail from Heather Mac - basically heads-up on where she's playing. I don't think Pressure Cookies is her thing.

Don't know Greg or Deon although I would love to meet fellow Steely Dan/Donald Fagen harpies- Kid Charlemagne, Throw out your Gold Teeth, Bad Sneakers etc etc.

Oi Rene. I was confused about the Pressure Cookies thing. Heather Mac plays with Ian Cohen in The Brills, along with Mark Harris and Tonia Selley (who is ex-Pressure Cookies[/i]). That's why I linked Pressure Cookies and Ian Cohen in my mind!!

Ian Cohen was with the Pressure Cookies - You mean that's why you linked Heather Mac with the Pressure Cookies - time to put the cap back on the scotch ?

PS: Let me know where and when you play out and I will come and support or heckle you. 8)

No ways, man. I've seen how vicious you can be!!! ? Based on what I've read, your daughter's a better guitarist than me, so I'll spare you from listening to an evening of covers performed with no guitar solos. I'm a strictly rhythm player ... :-[ I think you described it very aptly as the cover circus the other day ?

          Keep well

Ah come on, don't be so coy - the last time I did covers was at the Tavern in Diep River - Our 10 minute rendition of Pink Floyds Breath and Time went down so well with the locals that the management virtually pulled us off the stage with a Sheppard crook needless to say that was the first and last gig we got through Bands for Africa :-[ :-[ :-[.

So when I go to see live music even if it is not my bag I am supportive because I know how horribly wrong things can go and I always appreciate the fact that the establishment is employing musicians and not just switching on a friggin TV set.

hehe, no worries. I just figured if he's your inspiration, you've gotta know who played it!
I would say Kurt Cobain made me do it and I think a lot of guys my age would say so “ I think ”

I have Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards to blame along with my first teacher John E Sharpe.
                      After that came David Gilmour.
And then did I mention that Gilmour character.
