here's my diy late 60's boutique fuzz face (with a few cap and resistor mods):

i found an old players cigarette box in antique shop here in Hermanus for R50 which has a hinge. quite useful for tweaking ?
does wolfmother and sabbath tones excellently and i've managed to get a hendrix tone with volume and fuzz on full and rolling the guitar volume off a little. will sound waaay better with my 5E3 when i get that built ?

Just watched Mika's vid. Only at 360p though, so I couldn't figure what half of the pedals were. Thought the second one, the muff (I presume) and the last one sounded dynamite. Hmm,.. it worries me that my fuzzface sounds just like in the demo, and I wasn't that impressed.
I also just watched the Merkin fuzz vid, and I have to say, that thing sounds amazing. I'm feeling very sell-the-face-get-the-merkin right now.
I just don't know how I could own up to my mates that I own a pedal called a Merkin Fuzz. :?

Wikipedia to the rescue! - "As opposed to other distortion guitar effects pedals, a fuzzbox boosts and clips the signal sufficiently to turn a standard sine wave input into a waveform that is much closer to a square wave output. The sound of almost creating a square wave gives a "Rough around the edges" effect that creates the classic fuzz tone. This gives a much more distorted and synthetic sound than a standard distortion or overdrive. Fuzz sounds also tend to have lower Mid frequencies than other distortion types."
That help? Here's some musical examples:
Rolling Stones, Satisfaction - a Maestro fuzz, which makes for vintage 60's fuzz tone. Listen to the guitar riff. In fact one of the (many) sounds that started the fuzzbox craze in the 60s.
U2 Vertigo - The Edge using a Sobbat Fuzzbreaker, a smoother sounding fuzz. Notice how fat the tone is - not usually possible with a Tele and regular overdrive/ distortion:
Smashing Pumpkins - Electro Harmonix Big Muff. A seriously huge, corpulent fuzz tone. The fuzz is like a haze around the guitar sound. One of my favourite guitar solos is in this song.
Come on guys, give some more examples so that we may educate the masses on the merits of the almighty fuzz! ?

One of the great things about Satisfaction is how the guitar riff sounds like a horn - or even a horn section. The distortion is so complete that it just becomes this fat, brassy thing.

That Merkin gets that Satisfaction riff almost perfect... Iam so temted to get one too, just cuz its cool....

EH Big Muff into a Roland JC120 - Keeps all the rough edges. Most of what he does is actually just a Big Muff, the built in chorus and reverb and maybe delay. There is also an occasional guitar synth, but a lot less than people think.

Electronic Guitar video (REH video) - it's all there and is a bit of an eyeopener if you are into noisemaking.
