I know this is an old topic, but I thought I'd bring forth some related info:
Currently busy with rebuilding an old Aria 5102T, Alan pointed me in the direction of the waterslide transfer paper. Only managed to source from
http://www.jgelectronics.com/ . Only A3 laser, and a minimum of 5 sheets at R24 per sheet.
Cool, I thought I was in the pound seats, got some from them, and got busy.
Now, the headstock is black, with a gold Aria logo. I finally found a place with a laser printer, that was prepared to put something with plastic in their machine, and had it printed. It looked great!
I excitedley rushed home, cut out the logo, and slid it off onto a trial practice black headstock. The gold just disappeared against the black ?
I experimented on natural maple, and it worked fine, but turns into the "invisible logo" on black.
Anyway, I had to resort to having a vinyl decal printed. It really looks awesome against the black, but as Alan says, you gotta put a
lot of coats of clear on to level the surface 8) (remember to wear a respiratory mask - I got seriously poisoned)
Just thought someone could use this info to avoid unnecessary expense and also have to change direction mid build :-[
PS. when spraying small areas, I found a hairdryer really handy in speeding up the dry-time between coats.
