Sunday 6th of june ........
from 12(midday) to about 4 ish pm
at Indulgence cafe ( 225 beyers naude Drive , Northcliff ext 5 ) tel: 011 782 5063
Keira Witherkay & Carol are hosting a fundraiser in form of a music concert
to benefit human rights activist and artist Gabrielle Le Roux ( bio and details below)

ok so who is Gabrielle Le Roux

Gabrielle Le Roux is a South African artist and activist for social justice who creates projects of portraits and stories that pay tribute to brave activists while raising awareness about different human rights issues. Her exhibitions travel internationally and have been shown at universities and cultural centres in South Africa, the Caribbean and Uganda. More recently Le Roux has exhibited at NiNsee Museum in Amsterdam, Museum of London Docklands, Amnesty International Amsterdam and UNESCO Paris. In spite of this apparent success and visibility she continues to struggle to put food on the table as the non-commercial and clearly political nature of her work makes it difficult to find funding for. Le Roux is committed to this work and determined to continue using this tool to battle sexism, racism, classism and homophobia and transphobia.
her facebook link is http://www.facebook.com/#!/gabrielle.le.roux or google her to see her work as an activist and artist

now that you know who she is why the need for a fundraiser?

she has been invited to exhibit her art at the Istanbul LGBTI (Lesbian/gay/Bi sexual/Trangendered/Intersexed) pride in Turkey ( she is currently in Amsterdam ) Istanbul Pride has invited the exhibition because they are also keen to give some visibility to African LGBTI at their Pride this year. Amnesty Turkey has agreed to pay my ticket from Amsterdam to there but there is no further funding sponsorship for my accomodation and food and daily travel in Istanbul. I am also really hoping to do some more drawings at these events and will need to buy art supplies

The fundraiser will be in the form of a live music concert with performances by

Bob Dubery ( solo singer/acoustic guitarist )
Marcia Moon ( solo alternative original singer/songwriter)
Karryn & Tash ( alternative original band )
Keira Witherkay ( solo original world music guitarist/percussionist)

there will be a couvert charge of R30 per person ,but larger donations would be appreciated with all proceeds going to Gabrielle Le Roux, all the artists are donating their time to perform and the venue is not taking a hiring fee.

please support this event and even if you can't make the performance and feel strongly about helping Gabrielle exhibit at this monumental event in turkey feel free to contact me (Keira Witherkay) if you can offer assistance in any way, donations or services that can assist her ...ect ect

peace and light
Keira & Carol

if anyone has any extra fundraising idea's let me know............ but hope to see some of you GFSA'ers at the event on 6th june........ gonna be a great lineup......
Cool! How about recording off the board and selling the cds?
Cool as long as everybody performing is informed that a recording will be made and expressly consents to being recorded and the recordings being sold as part of the fund-raising effort.

I think it's a lovely idea but a potential minefield. My optometrist is wanting to have photos of real, happy customers on display in his new rooms. But his lawyers have informed him that he can't just snap and print and plak - he has to ask permission and then if the customer says "yes" they have to sign an indemnity form ceding all rights in said photographic images blah blah blah.

This is to prevent legal challenges in the future. There's always the chance that a dispute will arise over the ownership of said recordings.
I am, of course, the resident bucket of cold water for all optimistic ideas. I'm a "the glass is 1/16 empty" kind of guy.
yeah good point Bob, re copywrite ect ect ....... and what would for me be the main concern is finding someone to record it successfully........ afraid i got no recording gear ect ect ........ i know lots of people who will do a fab job long as they paid the pro rates but for this fundraiser ...we aint got no budget ............so would have to rope someone in to do it for free........ any volenteers???

as for copywrite i wonder how it would work..... prob have to contact the publishers and request permission ........but i think Bob's set will be the only set of non original material, and of course from the artists opinion i would want to have a say over anything going out into market........ so if and i only say if cos it seems unlikely but i would definitely want everyone to be happy with the tracks..........

and sure we could do an agreement of a limited run for sales for benefit....... so that the cd or sale of it is not exploited into the future .......

so a good idea in principle but i agree with Bob might be too much to balance when all is said and done..........

but yeah great idea....... i will be allowing a batch of my cd's to go up for sale that day and the total proceeds will go to Gabrielle....and NOT me .... ?

qoute from Gabrielle Le Roux ................... Wish I could attend and enjoy the wonderful music with you. Thank you so much for this great honour and support for my work…the support that I battle to find from cash-strapped human rights funders in the teeth of the global recession, I am finding from fellow-artists. Amazing. Thank you!
above is a quote from gabrielle she posted on the facebook ad for this event

It's the resident bucket of cold water that makes sure things work out in the long run... and then everyone's happy!

I guess that's like an economy feedback buster.

That was Karen of Tash and Karen (or is it Karen and Tash?). I thought they were really good. Very strong set.
