In anticipation of things to come next month I have been listening to Martin Simpson's album Prodigal Son. I like this a lot.
One of the things that surprises me about Simpson (or about myself) is the level that I can enjoy him at - a sort of micro-level. His craftsmanship is so exquisite, that his actual playing becomes beautiful. The attack on the strings, the way each note is phrased and presented.
I don't believe that this is enough to make a satisfying musical experience for me. There has to be a bit more meat at another level - good stories, good compositions, strong performances and Prodigal Son has that, but this detail, his masterful touch, adds another level at which I can enjoy the music.
A truly top player.

Thanks Bob
Will be getting me some Martin Simpson.
As I explained on "The Four Martins" DVD he does a couple of solo numbers that have a lot of slide playing, but as you say good craftsmanship and he has a very gentle touch.
Next time remind me to bring it with. Also has Martin Carthy and Martin Taylor, the fourth Martin is Juan Martin,a nylon player.
