Keira and I have been discussing another acoustic get together similar to the one she hosted last year.
The proposed date is Sunday April 11th - Keira does not have a gig on that date. Venue is the X-Rated residence. This is in suburban Jo'burg so that really rules out percussion and amplifiers (unless I want to annoy my neighbours - which I don't).
So
1: You can come to play and braai or just to braai or even just to play. IMO the more people there are that want to play the more interesting the afternoon.
2: I have covered areas in the garden - so guitars (and people) will have shelter from the elements.
3: I will provide the braai facilities and some snacks and bread rolls. Also a tub full of ice for keeping drinks cold.
4: You bring your own drinks, your guitars, your talent and enthusiasm [edit] and whatever you want to braai[/edit]. It would be helpful if you bought a salad to share.
5: I have parking for (with a squeeze) 6 or 7 cars. We also have a roving security patrol in the area.
6: I have dogs. Not big dogs, but it's their house and they have the run of it. They are more likely to try to scrounge food and pats on the head than to bite. In the past they have been OK with kids. But please don't bring your pets.
7: I don't want to post a complete address on an open forum, but I live in Montgomery Park. If you're saying "where's that" then it's between Melville and Northcliff, right opposite Westpark Cemetery (and yes, we know the joke about "the dead center of town").
8: Depending on numbers I might ask for volunteers to bring some extra chairs and a couple of umbrellas
9: Start is early afternoon. Say 14:00
So I want to gauge interest. Please indicate if you are interested and additionally if you are interested in playing.

yeah well i'm in....... and i'm sure my better half will attend too .....
oooh and NO percussion....... ? if that includes my percussion i do when i play then it's like doing half my act ? or by no percussion do you mean no drums as in drum kit ........ however if my percussion is un mic'd it won't be loud.....i have actually performed using it totally unmic'd and using a stomp board to get the bass drum... intstead of the mic ...and the cowbell/tamborine and splash cymble will be unmic'd but unfortunately my percussion style is a huge part of my show... so if it's not possible to use my percussion even un mic'd .......i'll gladly be there to support the event but just won't play....

I think your setup should be OK, Keira. But I really don't want to rile the neighbours (who are generally considerate and good neighbours) and I have to draw a line somewhere. Not quite sure where yet.... Kits would obviously be out.

Easy solution to the noise problem - invite the neighbours!! ?
Keira-WitherKay
thanks Bob..... and truly if i don't mic up it'll not be loud at all .... and i fully understand re neighbours..........
so are we gonna go totally unplugged? that might be a good exercise...... or as we discussed if not i can bring my system... or even my smaller system which i use in very intimate settings where they want it just above natural acoustic level.......
but if we outside and unplugged the "guests" will need to be quiet during performances.....as the sound will disperse quickly but i'm sure we can do that .......
either way i'm in and the use of my gear if needed.... looking forward to it
Sean
I'm keen to come, I'll only be able to confirm next week though, but provisionally, I'm in ?

I've had some verbal indications from various people that they intend to be there on the day. The problem here is my memory. At some point I will have to mail out a map and/or directions. So if you intend to come along please either indicate your intent in this thread or PM me, then I will have a record of who to send the details to.

You can count me in.. 8)

OK... there have been some off-forum responses too. At the moment I think we're looking at 12 to 14 people with at least 7 of those playing. Which is going to make for a good garden party. A mix of steel and nylon string players as well, and some stylistic breadth.
I think I would like to have a sort of "open mic" session early on where everybody gets their 15 minutes of infamy, then we can see what happens in terms of jams or another round of open mic. Or maybe we could ask some of the people coming to give demonstrations and have little workshops - eg some basic flamenco techniques or, if there's not enough people familiar with that style, the basics of Travis picking. We might even attempt to answer that burning philosophical question "does tonewood make any difference" (if the guitars I think will be there do turn up).
I am also going to ask for a volunteer to look after the fires, bit we can take care of that on the day.
Then there is an official photographer to be appointed so that we can document that a guitaring good time was held somewhere other than Cape Town.
So there's sufficient interest that this is definitely a go. Thanks everybody.

If you can, bring a guitar stand. Then we can try to get a group photo of all the non-human participants

Yes indeedy. But only on the 11th ?

Conrad will be there, and has offered to give a short workshop/demonstration on some flamenco techniques. Please let me know if you're interested. I don't want Conrad to spend a lot of time preparing for this if the audience will be one man and a dog.

Sounds good. I'll just have to confirm closer to the time... if I'll be in Joburg ?
