This post is more about the merits of spending 150 Dollars (around R1600.00 if you include shipping and customs duties at the post office) for a boutique US product against spending R380.00 for an excellent product that is now readily available locally, and to my ears just as good.
Being a student, I thought I'd put my 1cent in here..
IF you are Eric Johnson, and playing everyday is what you do for a living, and you get to the kind of ear-sensitivity that you can hear what colour of grill cloth your amp has on, then it is COMPLETELY worth it.
You would then know, playing on worse pickups, that you
could have better tone..
Should have better tone actually, because this is your job!
But if like me, you play live only occasionally, and it's more of a hobby (albeit a very enjoyable one) then it might not be worth it - I'd rather spend that money on saving for a new amp or whatever.
What I'm trying to say is that it's not just about whether it's worth it for the money, it's also about what you need it for. If you're the best at what you do, and you can afford it, then you will want to have the best gear. Everyone else should be free to decide whether they want to pay 3, 4 or ten times more.
