Here are the contestants for "Friday Night in San Francisco" Voting closes Sunday night
Evo, category A, "friday night next to the tree" It could have done with a better mix but its late (for me) and its what I could come up with for now. It is done on electric, without an elegant gypsy setup... so theres only clean guitars... with my pickups on a way different setting than normal. I could not get near an acoustic sound but gimme an acoustic and I'll do this on there... otherwise hush :) http://www.box.net/shared/yvvr2gtdqd Hope it is acceptable.

Managed to do something on Sunday. Here's my entry. Category A http://www.box.net/shared/0o688s832j

http://www.box.net/shared/5tpyvfg726 All the squonks played takamines. Squonk Al - middle Squonk Paco - left Squonk John - right
• Pete (A): 3

Nice one all around guys...

Pete: very chill sunday vibe, liked it alot. It could easily find its way to the latin jazz compilation I have lying around somwhere.

Squonk: very nicely done dude! Also a chill vibe going on

Don: Rodrigo n shaggable influence for you? Very nicely done and great execution on the end

AJB: Al di Meola for you! stunning man!

Like I said... nicely done all around... its gonna be a tough one
Wow! this is exactly what i was hoping for, tough competition.

I might stew over the votes for a day or seven.
All good entries ?

The only problem would be that whoever is voting would have to have heard "Friday night in San Fransisco" to be able to judge how true to the topic the contestants got!

I must admit Andrew sounds even better than Al di Meola!
Pete, that latin guitar thing is awesome, you need to post some longer clips.
Evo - that is very Hectic Playing, awesome stuff
Don - brilliant tune, good recording techniques, I dig the panning etc

Good topic Don
yeah Squonk I'm also stoked with the quality of entries...

I don't know who to vote for.

Evo, sheeeeeyyyyaaaaat that is cool. The left guitar at 0:53 is bang on the money.

I reckon Pete, Andrew and Evo should do a live trio acoustic set. Squonk and I can open for you. ?

"Friday Night on The Bluff"?
Thanks Don n Squonk ?

My track is a bit mixed in a way. Three different sections... trying to portray the seriousness, the comedy and the beauty of tre guitarra...

The first section is pseudo John and Al playing (John right and Al left) cos John likes playing outside notes. Al doing the rhythm work with an odd flurry here n there.

The second section starts a key change and has John (plectrum) playing rhythm with Paco (fingerstyle) in the middle and Al starting off the shred delight. On the diminished chord John begins to accompany Al and compliment.

The break before the third part of beauty brings in the comedic element of breaking out of the shred with three opposing lines. Paco on the Bb stationary chord, John going up and Al coming down. Then the beauty of all three playing the Bm chord, one with harp harmonics, another open, and the third playing an ascending line bringing the original key back.

Just a little breakdown of what went into it, lol. Glad its liked.
Just downloaded all the entries. Will give them all extended listens this evening and then vote.

But all things said & done, this is one very difficult topic and i salute you fine gents for your entries.

Cheers

Yeah what he said and it would't hurt to let me know what category you want to be placed in [/whine][/mutter][/grumble]

What's clear to me Squonk is that you are hiding a not inconsiderable light under a bushel. I hope you turn up at TJs next week and let some of that squonkness out into the world. Instrumentals would be quite fine at that evening.
holy hell , all the entries are off the hook

serious talent here...

I think we can safely abandon categories this week because of the standard

Norio, I had my details in the ID3 tag, I see Evolucian, AJB and Squonk did too

Ja, I saw that too - still makes it easier if you just place the stuff in the filename as well so we don't have to play the file (or right-click it) to remind ourselves of what's what. Spare a thought for poor Rene - our selfless competition organise. Poor dude. Shame ?
Let me start by saying that all the entries for this comp are seriously off the hook!

Here's what i really loved:

AJB - The muted picking was ubercool (very DiMeola). I loved the big intervallic slides and the dreamy progression.

Peter - I loved the rushed feel & the climax at 1:04. Very dreamy stuff between 1:07 & 1:18. Very nicely done Mr Theron...or is that Mr. McLaughlin now?

Squonk - Hectic intro 8) Very cool harmonized lines between 00:30 & 00:45. I think its time the 3 squonks started doing gigs.

Don - Although i love shred, i love your piece because you focussed on the melody and threw in some intense licks as counter point. The ending was pure genius!

Pete - Firstly, very cool groove. Maybe its just me, but your behind the beat playing combined with the very jazzy feel of the piece was fantastic.

Like Andrew said, there is some serious talent here.

Cheers
Thanks Arjun

Shot for taking the time to listen to all the entries.

Ive actually started a little folder collecting all the entries.

When will you be joining us with an entry again?
Always a pleasure bru.

And seeing as i had time on my hands and that this comp featured some big hitters, i decided to spend some quality time and listen to all the entries a couple of times.

That folder idea is quite cool and maybe i should do the same.

As for entering future comps, my life is in turmoil at the moment. I've spent more time away from home than being at home this year.

I've been in Jo'burg for the past 3 days, and it looks like i'm going to be here another 2 weeks. :'(

I miss my guitar :'(
I hear your pain bro..

I miss my RGA.. not spending enough time with her.

Right now , I dont have enough guitar time... and further more

I still want to learn a new programming language..
• [deleted]

Arjun, while you're up here you can come round and play my guitars. No problemo!
