  • TJs open mic night - thursday 25th of Feb - your host.... X-Rated Bob!

TJs have asked me to run their open mic night on the 25th of this month.

Part of the reason for this is that they want to get some new faces into the club - both comperes and performers.

So once again here's a chance for those of you who want to break your performing duck this year. You need minimum one, maximum three songs or instrumentals that you can play - solo or with others, originals or covers.

My brief from the club is that preference is to be given to new faces, so if you are new to performing or to TJs and you want to play then you will play and I will try to accomodate requests from those who want to play at a specific time.

TJs provide PA, microphones and lines into their mixing desk.

If you just want to sit in the audience then that's also OK.

TJs Acoustic Music Club.
Marks Park sports club, Judith Road, Emmarentia, Johannesburg
Thursday 25th February
Music starts at 20:00
Drinks and hot meals can be ordered from the Marks Park staff.
Admission: R20.

If you want to play you can just turn up on the night, but you can also PM me in advance.
Will they provide a big black screen between me and the audience so I can imagine they're not there?

I can do one song, I think. Put me down, please. Time to get my shakes under control!
Pity I'm in Durbs - would be there like a shot.
I will try to get a song together! :-[

        Any style Bob?
Any style you want - but note that it's an ACOUSTIC club. They occasionally allow an electric bass or guitar, but death metal is probably pushing things too far. Also lots of people with amps does not make for a slick open mic night.

Don't worry about the audience. They are generally supportive and encouraging.
Will an electric (distorted) ballad be okay? I have a Korg PX5D that can plug right into the PA.

Hi Bob. Where is this place?

Conrad, Judith Road runs between Beyers Naude (just below Melville) and Barry Hertzog (if it's still called that in the bottom end of Greenside). Near the Beyers side you'll see the Marks Park sports complex, and you can get directions at the main gate.

i never heard anyone use an overdrive pedal there to date ... but hey maybe the new faces will really shake it up a bit ......

but guys this is an acoustic club.......so maybe just play clean electric if you don't have an acoustic to bring along.... or loan one there ...

and yeah almost any song can be played on acoustic and sound cool so that would be my take......

remember most who attend who are acoustic fans and may not be into electric guitar ......... so the distorted sound might ruffle some feathers.....

but yeah i do recommend anyone wanting to do the open mic not stress over the audience they mega supportive
Hmmm, clean electric ballad - I can do that. I've been practising some stuff that I like. Maybe they'll like it too.
Oops. Apologies for the glaring oversight in my previous post. I read from Bob's 2nd post. I will now promptly chastise myself using every self depricating method known to man.

That will not be necessary. They charge an entry fee, which should just about cover your sins.

BTW, Bob, congrats on this achievement.
OK... here's Marks Park club on Google Maps. Hopefully a green marker will show, and that marks their parking.

As Stratisfear observed, Judith road runs between Beyers Naude Drive and Barry Hertzog Avenue. Pan the map EAST (right) and you will find Barry Hertzog.

Pan left/west and you will come to Beyers Naude and West Park Cemetery. Melville is south (down) along Beyers Naude. Northcliff corner is north/up along Beyers Naude. The locals have heard all the jokes about "the dead center of town".

As this is Google Maps you can use it to find a route between the club and another address.

The entrance is quite easy to see as you travel along Judith. Turn in, you'll come to a boomed gate. Tell the guys at the gate you are going to TJs and they will direct you.

NB! TJs do not always use the same room - so if you're not sure then ask the guys at the gate.

Well shucks! I just get to say "Let's have a big hand for...." and perhaps pull the plug if somebody is truly awful.

Careful ... I grew up in a house that was very close to Northcliff Corner.
Hell - I remember when it was built !!
You can put me down Bob, and you can pull the plug at any time!

Best to bring an extra lead with you then. Use their lead from the output of the Korg, your lead between Korg and guitar. I always do this when I take a pedal (gasp!) along.

+1 to that. Except from Slaapstad in my case.

I wish there was something like this here.
                                      @ Bob

I only have one Acoustic Guitar, could there be use of another one in case of string breaking etc?
? Squonk. What a brilliant way to get to play Bobs Larry or Morgan! Just pitch up with rusty old strings and Bobs your (very generous) uncle. ? ?
