I recently absolutley worshipped Tom Morrello from RATM (i still like him) but someone pointed out "take away his whammy pedal and see what happens". This was an attack on my favourite player, but you know what if they hadnt said that it would have never stirred my thought, or developed my inner conscious...... So i am living proof that this process is productive.
So it helped your playing? That's not constructive IMO - it adversely affected your perception of someone you regard(ed) highly, so is actually destructive. And you allowed it to sway you away from the many great things you can learn from Morello (who is one of the better "new breed of players and the best riff writer since Page, IMO).

Sorry guys I have tried on this one, really I have. I would say that it was totally constructive to be enlightened to this something which my love for the player may have overlooked. So I see it as a step forward.
Harmoney Central, thats a great place to learn, I see nothing wrong with that site, infact it has helped me with alot of my gear.
I realise sadly that some cannot be swayed that this is a relevant subject, fair enough...
I do hope however you didnt post on the who's your favourite guitarist thread as you have made a scale, of best you must have a least.
Schopeneur and socrates, if they played guitar would give hell,
I dont quite know how Sports least favourite is any different, to guitar??? millions take that more seriously.
Anyhow I shall retire, from this now.
Be sure to talk again on a similar story ?................. ?
Tokai-SA
RATM - Last Resort - one of my all time favourite songs, I love that song.
Can't find it on Youtube. ☹

Naah, I'm with Mika on this. Music might be scientific and precise and can be explained and performed in exact mechanical ways, but above all else its magic lies in its emotive effect on us. And when Emotion gets a foot in the door, Argument is standing behind it with a bottle of merlot and a grin on its face. The different ways in which we are affected by the same things will almost always lead to a difference of opinion. Some people will chose to air their opinions, others not. I fall in the first category. Besides, when you meet someone new, do you only ask her what her favourite things are? No, you want know the dislikes and the reasons for them as well. Now now you end up with a wife who loves Hendrix and braaivleis but hates puppies and the handicapped. So who is your least favourite anything is as valid a question me as its opposite.

I have to agree.
Allong with Vai and Satriani...Not that shredding is a problem, just there style.
Tamago
guitar snobs.. people who stand there and question you on theory, or who rip on peoples gear or who judge others skills
I left another forum to focus on this one, for the above reason. I won't mention names
The worst guitarist there is, has to be Paul Reynolds of A Flock of Seagulls.
Why?
Because he was known to be limited in skill, and furthermore, the bands music felt so incomplete, and makes me feel like I need to finish it.
Don't get me started on Kurt Cobain.... oh he sounds false!
MIKA-the-better-one
you cant crit Kurt, cmon, ok tell me what you dont like about him?

You can't say that, after all we've been through ???
Of course he can crit Kurt. He can be made sick by the very sound of him. We fought for his right to express his hatred of him man! You're not having regrets now are you? ?
Stay on message ?
MIKA-the-better-one
No I think its great he must crit him, I just want to no know more??? Its no good to just say we dont like them. Remember the issues of the whole satriani thing when i just said i didnt like him. there were problems. >☹

Okay, I listened again to Nirvana 3 days or so ago...
Every other guitarist speaks to me... Kurt, his guitar style and playing... uh, does nothing for me, it sounds false, even more so now that I receiving proper tuition.
That song, called "Sounds like teen spirit" uh, that is just bland guitar work with a lot of headbanging and screaming... I am sorry if I offend anyone but that is what my interpretation is... I find nothing I enjoy in any of his music.

Well, in the video for Smells like... he's detuning all his strings during the song's solo, instead of replaying the solo for the camera, and that's pretty much a statement on his whole approach to music: a rejection (a denial, a denial, a denial) of flashy playing and masking trite lyrics with catchy hooks. As far as guitar goes, I guess he could only be an anti-hero. Which is fine by me.

You are my new best friend.... I just don't get the hype over Nirvana and Kurt Cobain.

Ja well, you had to be there.... (sighs and thinks back longingly to a time when everything was shyte except us grungers and I still had a use for shampoo....)
MIKA-the-better-one
Right well if "teen spirit" is the only song you base nirvana on then you havent got a good picture..... they hated that song, they refused to play it most shows. It is bland 4 chord rock, but listen to something not on the album nevermind, listen to in UTERo....... or bleach...........
I dont really think tuition makes a guitarist worse. your playing may develop away from it or that specific sound. But yeh people are critting this is good!!!
Kurt was a great musician I reckon, he sometimes gets caught in this whole "brooding soul" stereotype. Whereby he was just another John lennon style musician writer, who got picked up on the bandwagon or Grunge (and all tis inconsistances"
But yes if you are uninspired by him this is great.
Its the same way I dislike Metallica ( I sense nothing in there music but boredom, and ACDC)

But the thing is, I get all the other bands from that era, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains etc. It's just Nirvana that eludes my liking....
And before someone accuses me of not knowing their music, I do have a lot of Nirvana albums...

Well to be honest I have the Nevermind album....
I listened to it from start to finish, several times. It really didn't gel with me....
the track "Come as you are" did even less for me.
The cover version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, by "Weird Al" Yankovic, is better....

+1. Pearl Jam (Ed Vedder + Stone gossard = Awesome), Soundgarden had Chris Cornell (and Kim Thayil "can" play the guitar). And Alice in chains had Jerry Cantrell (who is another awesome guitar player).
I used to like the Nirvana stuff, but i somehow grew out of it (Guess i stopped being angry about a lot of things).
