Ok, let me take a deep breath, sip some tea and assume that you are talking about current favourites, but that if you had to look back on your life, a player like Jimi would rank slightly higher than last under all-time favourites ?
Dude....tea!!!!!! What exactly happened there in New York??? ?

@Singe. I'm just glad I finally caught on. ?

After giving this question some thought, I didnt find the answer ?..., but realised (in my case) not really giving a specific guitar player recognition because he doesnt appeal to me added a certain element of difficulty to this question, I could probably say which genre I find less appealing as apposed to those dominating my CD pouch/mp3 player, but probably could not really name many guitarists other than those that I enjoy.
Having said that, I would say my least favourite guitarist (that I know of) would be myself a few years ago. If I look at some footage of gigs I have played in previous bands, I seem to look rather awkward and listening to the recordings we did, I feel now I could do some more interesting playing now.... So my answer to this question would probably be..... ShaunYear2004.

Mine isn't me, years ago or indeed today, because (a) I don't even consider myself good enough to be a candidate ?, (b) I wouldn't want to speak ill of a forum member's playing ?, and (c) I can't be at all objective about me.

OK I'll say something controversial: I buy every CD that Rusty Cooley plays on because there is so much to learn from him but I wish he would pay more attention to his tone! It's like all the notes are exactly the same volume and played at the same position between neck and bridge.

I think MIKA meant, "Which guitar players that you hear a lot about do really not enjoy."
I don't think he meant that at all. ?
MIKA-the-better-one
I meant "Which guitar players do you hear, that you find yourself disliking" Perhaps due to there repeated modes of playing, the style in which they play, or even the facial expression they have when playing. Its fine if you find no guitaist annoying or you dislike no one, BUt I do and I do beleive there are a few oter forum members who can air their opinions on guitarists they dislike.
I think I might die however if everyone took such a neautral, tender foot opinion on everything.

You should check on the definition of the word "tenderfoot", but I think I get the gist of your meaning.
I do have to wonder why these conversations are always oriented in the negative direction though. Why "least favourite guitarist" instead of "favourite"? Why "I hate this guitar" instead of "I love
this one"? It just strikes me as being a very negative attitude which serves no-one well, least of all the people putting it forward. To my mind it either speaks to contrariness for the sake of being contrary or a general insecurity about those items/people that they
do admire.
MIKA-the-better-one
i saw the thread saying "who is your favourite" So I created the counter to it, it keeps the forum in harmony and symetrical... I dont really think anything negative came of this, we all do dislike some guitarists, and to express it is fine i beleive, however woth respect.
There seems to me to always be a lack of criticalness, as well as an overall attitude of as I mentioned a neutral nature. Its as Hegal put it, in history in greece everyone lived in harmoney, no questions, and then socrates came along, and asked these critical questions, and so developed the inner conscience, and a far more critical culture that allowed the progression of man. All in all, this criticalness is to attain the final end in development.
Just to clarify when have I stated I hate this guitar?

He is obviously a good guitarist, I wold never say oh I hate him, but I woud say that to say nicklebacks 3 doors down possibly I suspect.
Question things - agreed. But, to couch it in the negative is counterproductive.

I say the topic is valid (and I'm sure it's not just my angry, blinding hang-over speaking). I don't think there's any reason to mod out the odd bit of negativity. If MIKA - to use a handy example ? - were to respond to every thread with, "Nah. He sux." You might want a word with him. But amazingly, with his talk of Hegel and Socrates, he has a strong point, imo. Critical thinking involves embracing some concepts and discarding others - after reflection.
In a [plays Nazi card] nazi state, negativity is illegal. You must go about your business with a smile on your face and never say anything bad about anyone who's not designated a target. Now we all accept the ban on talking about politics and religion. But I think being free to talk smack about distant entertainment figures (with a little justification thrown in) enriches the forum. It's challenging without being insulting.
The point is, in these discussions you can't be wrong. We're talking about the feelings that a player produces in us, and it's ok to feel whatever we like. So if someone says, "Hendrix sux cos he fuzzes everything into a mess," I don't need to feel offended. It doesn't produce a negative spin to my day. It just makes me think, "Why don't I think Hendrix sucks, even though he does use conspicuous amounts of fuzz on many recordings?" You're challenged. You think. You grow...
Then we all go home and have tea and cookies ?

I'm not saying the topic is not valid and I'm certainly not advocating banning, locking or deleting anything.
It's just that musicians (especially guitarists) tend to be negative about other players and the types of music they do not play themselves. The old "lightbulb" joke (one to screw it in and ten to say how they could do it better) is funny precisely because it is so true. They also have a tendency to dislike gear because of what it is not instead of finding out what it is. But PeteM is correct in saying that negativity is unproductive. If someone doesn't like a specific player it serves no good to discuss it. Simply move on to someone you do like and figure out why you like them or learn to play their music and incorporate elements of that style in your own playing. Dwelling on your dislikes doesn't teach you anything.
Philosophy is all well and good, as is the scientific method where any theory can be challenged at any time, but this is a public discussion in the "real world", with interpersonal relationships and how you present yourself here is how you are perceived.
singemonkey
Fair point.
MIKA-the-better-one
But without bringing to light the dislikes how would we be productive...... In no way are some of these guitarists wrong, but to other guitarists, they may not understand or appreciate the point of there playing, even when explained to.
Science plays no real part in this though, we are not looking for some empirical evidence, we are discussing the way forward in a rational manner... In politics you rarely find the govt going
"mmm guys, lets not even change whats wrong at the moment, lets rather just talk about whats going good"
There would be no real improvement..... Now you ma say Music is more art so to be critical of ones art is wrong, as its completley subjective to the individual, but then half of art is ones perception of it, so.............. we as the perceivers of say a guitarists art can, should and will be critical. It may not change a thing but its part of the process of perception.
Now this aside I am not gonna say Satriani, or anyone is a no talented hack, but I may say that I find my perception of them a little less amazing than the other.
I recently absolutley worshipped Tom Morrello from RATM (i still like him) but someone pointed out "take away his whammy pedal and see what happens"
This was an attack on my favourite player, but you know what if they hadnt said that it would have never stirred my thought, or developed my inner conscious...... So i am living proof that this process is productive.

But why take away his whammy pedal if he's producing good stuff with it? Let him get on with what he does.

Those old fuzz boxes of the '60's sounded terrible, especially in live situations. To be honest, I for one never liked JH's sound and I do not have any of his recordings, but I played some of his stuff live (Hey Joe, Purple Haze) because many people liked it or requested it. As a
person JH was a great guy I hear. At the time he carved a
niche in pop sound which was very different from the music of the day and he'll be remembered for that.
Neither did I like the sound of Al Caiola (Pete will remember him) but played some of his music (Guitar boogie, Guns of Navaronne) because of its popularity at the time........
However, and this is important imho, once you've learnt to play their music you also start to appreciate their respective skills, irrespective of whether you like their music/sound or not.

Once you start a thread with a title, "who's your least favourite guitarist", that's it, not even Schopenhauer & Socrates can help you...you will be fried. ?
At Harmony Central it will become thread of the year, but not here...IMO

I suspect you're over-interpreting there a bit, Lance. ?

If it was "who's your least favourite, tennis/cricket/soccer/rugby/golf player"...or who's your least favourite soccer team, are you a Man United fan or an Arsenal or Chelsea fan, then that's a cool discussion...you know what I mean, armchair sportsman, a couple of beers with the boys, etc, etc.
But 'your least favourite guitarists' doesn't quite make sense to me...if I'm not mistaken no one has mentioned their least favourite guitarists on the entire thread?
No more from me on this one. ?
